Matt Taverna prepares to cross the stage and receive his diploma.
Dear friends and colleagues,

On Saturday, May 4, we celebrated the accomplishments of our newest USD graduates. The story of one student in particular—Matt Taverna—touch ed the hearts of countless alumni, faculty, staff and students that week.

Matt is a USD English education student who was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma just over one year before his projected graduation date. His residency instructor, Andrea Wange, recalled, "'He kept saying 'I don't want to miss school. I don't want to miss being here for the students.'"

After taking a semester off for treatments, Matt returned to school and completed his yearlong residency. This month, he received his well-deserved diploma.

Congratulations to Matt and the rest of our graduates. We are so proud of you.
