COPH researchers help identify mutant gene that alters effectiveness of anti-malarial drug regimen

Artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs) have greatly decreased deaths caused by Plasmodium falciparum malaria, a mosquito-borne disease that accounts for roughly 90 percent of the world’s malaria mortality. But Plasmodium falciparum is becoming increasingly resistant to ACTs, making an already dangerous parasite even more threatening.

Sabrina Arancibia, BSPH, is a prevention and outreach specialist at Empath Health in Tampa, Fla.

 

Scott Dotson, PhD, CIH, DABT, is a principal scientist with the Insight Exposure and Risk Sciences Group in Cincinnati, Ohio.

 

Sara Doyle, BSPH, is a planner II with the Florida Department of Health—Pinellas County, Public Health Preparedness Division.

 

Cody Waldrop, BSPH, earned the Certified Veterinary Practice Managers credential, the highest credential for veterinary managers. He is a practice management officer at Associated Veterinary Partners in Tampa, Fla.
