The COPH pays tribute to its founder, Sam Bell

Samuel “Sam” P. Bell, III, father of the COPH and overall champion of USF, died March 14 at the age of 83. Bell, the husband of former USF president Betty Castor, served in the Florida Legislature for 14 years. He dedicated himself to improving health policies throughout the state, particularly those policies that affected children.

Research

COPH, Hillsborough County to receive $15 million+ from CDC grant

The COPH is partnering with the Florida Department of Health, Hillsborough County, on programs designed to help build, reinforce and retain the public health workforce in the county. Funding for the county’s programs, totaling more than $15 million over five years, is coming from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Public Health Infrastructure Grant Program.

BSPH student Shannon Nelson has had her fair share of challenges. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2022, has navigated money issues and dealt with the devastating deaths of 10 family members and friends, including her husband and mother, over the course of just a few years.

Center of Excellence in Maternal & Child Health


The University of South Florida is home to Florida’s first and only HRSA-funded Center of Excellence in Maternal & Child Health (MCH). The center prepares students, scholars and professionals for leadership to address and prevent major public health problems for women, children and families, especially those from culturally diverse and underserved populations.



Tune in to hear current students talk about their experiences and paths toward the MCH workforce. Then, join them in the College of Public Health and help advance the public’s health!
