A Note from the Vice President for Student & Alumni Affairs...

Dear Parents and Family Members,
We're getting to the time of the year when our students are experiencing their first exams in their classes. For those of you who have upperclass students at USF, this might not seem like a big deal. For you parents of new students, however, this can be a source of stress and anxiety for students. Sometimes, that first test in biology doesn't go as well as hoped, and they start doubting their ability to be successful. We know that your student belongs here. We know they can be successful. It might be helpful to remind them of all the support they can receive depending on what might be stressing them out - Counseling, Tutoring, and Supplemental Instruction are just some of the resources to get your student back on track. Also, our professors genuinely want your student to succeed. Sometimes, making a leap to meet with a professor during office hours to ask for advice and/or help is the medicine they need to ease their concerns.
As always, if you happen to be concerned about your student for any reason, feel free to give me a call (815-740-5055). We can discuss what you think they might need, and I can ensure that your student is making the connections they need to be successful. We are partners in your student's success!
Wishing you peace and all good things,
Damon Sloan
Vice President for Student & Alumni Affairs

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is home to a variety of supports for students, all free of charge. Two full-time staff are available to give one-on-one guidance on learning strategies and time management. Consultations can be one-time or ongoing meetings throughout the semester. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged.
The ARC also coordinates tutoring services. Some subjects offer walk-in services (math, writing, science) while others require appointments. Full schedules and instructions on setting appointments are available in the MyUSF portal,
HERE.
It’s important to remember that all students benefit from support in courses; tutoring is not just something for students who have earned a low grade. Instead, it is a great opportunity to get formative feedback on progress in a course and ensure that you are preparing properly for future exams. All tutors are peers who have taken the courses and are trained in a variety of tutoring topics such as learning theory and communication. The ARC does accept requests for tutoring in subjects without a tutor. Please contact Joanna Kourtidis
jkourtidis@stfrancis.edu
with any requests.
