Spring 2023

USF Health Pediatrics Spring 2023

Chair's Message

When the CDC Director, who oversees the fellowship program that I am enrolled in, has people introduce themselves, he asks them to describe what they’re doing to change the world. I just love thinking about what we’re doing, individually and as an institution, to change the world. The world is very complicated right now, and there’s so much bad news. But there are also so many good things happening on the micro and macro levels. We are all “works in progress” as we struggle to adapt to new technologies, threats, and challenges — but also to new opportunities.

I recently transitioned several patients into adult care and had the opportunity and privilege to receive notes from them. These were notes sent to our YYC team because our young adult patients require team effort. These patients can be challenging, and individual patients may connect better with one team member versus another. As a team, we keep each other grounded in our expectations of what we can achieve but are frequently surprised at the transformation over 3-5 years as the youth matures into adulthood. Despite challenges, it is very satisfying when we can successfully transition a patient into adult care, enabling them to manage their own healthcare and to better understand what that entails. In doing so, we change the world on a micro level by helping one person. When we change systems or policies, we influence the world at a macro level. Both levels of influence are critically important and interrelated. It is our patients and each other that inspire us to improve. I hope that you view all our department’s accomplishments highlighted in this spring newsletter as steps, no matter how small, towards improving our healthcare environment. As a collective we are changing the world — through our actions towards each other, our patients, and our communities.
