This year's event will be hosted by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1 where recent renovations to their building and parking lot boast substantial sustainable features. The 40,000 square foot building was built in 1960 and is on the National Register of Historic Places for its modernist design. Renovations include a solar canopy on their parking lot that provides 160 kWh annually (enough to power 15 average sized homes) and electric vehicle charging stations; new HVAC system projected to save $22,000 annually; added insulation, a white roof, new windows, updated LED lighting, and water efficient fixtures.

Welcome our New Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator!
We are so excited to welcome our new team member!
Fredericka Brandt (Freddie) is kicking off the new year as our new Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator. She is an innovative efficiency-driven sustainability enthusiast coming to us from the St. Louis Public School District and as Dogtown Ecovillage's Sustainability Outreach Coordinator. Freddie was born in St. Louis, MO in Tower Grove South but grew up living in Texas, California, and even abroad in Romania and Belgium. She studied International Business at Webster University, played soccer, and graduated with International Distinction. With the intention to make a positive impact in her community, Freddie has been a member of USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter since 2018; was a Green Schools Quest mentor for Mason School of Academic and Cultural Literacy, SLPS; co-started the Energy Footprint Program with Dogtown Ecovillage; facilitated an environmental leadership program, ECO-ACT, with the Missouri Botanical Garden; was a vegetable gardener for Bowood Farms; and started her career in sustainability with the EarthWays Center as an events and marketing intern.
We are excited that she will be continuing her sustainability career with a focus on green building! Be sure to welcome Freddie Brandt as the newest member to the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter team when you attend one of our upcoming events and ask her about her personal commitment to live a zero-waste lifestyle.

2020 Benchmarking & Energy Efficiency Training Calendar
Looking to save money? Save ENERGY. Whether you're in a single family home or a building over 50,000 sq. feet the first step in determining how to reduce operating costs, conserve resources, and reduce environmental impacts is to benchmark.
BENCHMARKING is the process of tracking your building's energy and/or water use and comparing your performance to similar buildings and to past performance. According to the City of St. Louis, "Improving building performance across the city could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 11% and save at least $61.5 million in annual energy costs."

City of St. Louis Passes Solar Ready Ordinance
"As Mayor, I want people to know that this Administration is taking the climate crisis seriously and meeting its challenges head-on, especially at the local level," said City of St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson upon signing important green building legislation in December of 2019. The City of St. Louis is the first in the Midwest and second in the country to require new construction to be "solar ready."
Thinking of going solar? St. Louis is thinking ahead thanks to 28th Ward Alderwoman Heather Navarro who sponsored
Board Bill 146
, which received unanimous approval by the full Board of Aldermen on December 13, 2019. This "solar ready" bill requires that new residential, multifamily or commercial construction in the City be designed in a way that can facilitate the installation of rooftop solar panels, in compliance with the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (baseline for energy efficiency). Rooftop solar panels are a great way to go green and save money on electric bills, reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by generating electricity for buildings. Thanks to this new ordinance a typical homeowner could save $4,000 on solar installation costs and a commercial building owner could save $25,000 instead of retrofitting an existing building.

New Electric Vehicle Charging Station Planned
SoLiS Mobility, headquartered in St. Louis, will open its very first vehicle charging station in May 2020 right here in St. Louis. Partnering with Green Street St. Louis and the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership, SoLiS Mobility, an electric vehicle charging infrastructure provider, toured proposed project sites around the city of St. Louis, got introduced to food and beverage providers, university planning departments, and local commercial developers before deciding on the 2340 Market Street location, near the intersection of Jefferson & Market
Not only will electric cars be able to recharge but this new holistic fueling station will serve as a ride finding and sharing hub, equipped with a lounge, business center space, Kaldi's Coffee, and healthy grab-and-go food. According to STL Partnership, "This $3.2 million economic development project evokes the innovative spirit that is synonymous with St. Louis and moves us further towards a path of sustainability."
Having an EV charging hub will hopefully entice more electric cars to get on the road in 2020 and will provide the opportunity for St. Louis visitors and residents to ride share from a central location.

Don't miss the opportunity to hear from the 2020 keynote speaker, Danni Washington. As the first African-American/woman of color to host her own science television series, Danni Washington is deeply passionate about our oceans and science communications. At age 21, she and her mom Michelle Swaby-Smith co-founded the Big Blue & You - a non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring and educating youth about marine conservation through the arts and media. Danni is the host of a STEM educational TV series which features the latest advancements in bio-inspired technology and design called XPLORATION NATURE KNOWS BEST which is nationally syndicated on FOX & available on HULU, Amazon Prime and throughout the world.

St. Louis County Updates Building Code
On December 17, the St. Louis County Council voted unanimously to pass an updated building code for new residential and commercial buildings in St. Louis County. The bill was co-sponsored by Councilmembers Dunaway and Harder and included a lot of
compromise between the County, the local Home Builders Association and energy efficiency advocates.
USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter was part of the coalition advocating for more energy efficiency measures in the code - thanks to members who reached out to St. Louis County elected officials! Thanks to the County Council for their leadership, and thanks to the Sierra Club for leading the charge.
The new code is 15% more energy efficient than what is currently in place. It will save the average new homeowner $250 per year in utility bills through energy efficiency improvements like: increased wall and ceiling insulation, better windows, and new testing requirements to ensure homes perform properly.
The new code, based off the 2015 International Codes, is set to go into effect in Spring 2020.
