July 2019 Newsletter
The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.
Freedom Fest 2019
The JBLM Freedom Fest was once again a smash hit with its fair food, the annual Classy Chassis Car Show, carnival rides, games, Kids’ World magic, games and kids’ stage acts, sponsor booth giveaways, roving entertainers and the  USO Northwest  sponsored stage entertainment.

This year's performers were  Megs McLean  and headliner award-winning Montgomery Gentry  band.

The evening ended as every Independence Day should, with an amazing fireworks show. Thank you to  JBLM MWR  for hosting the event and allowing the USO to contribute.

Lastly, thank you to all the service members and their families for continuing to keep this country free.

Sea-Tac Center
Daughters of the American Revolution Cascade Chapter :

As you know the USO Northwest Sea-Tac Center is one of only 7 in the United States that is 24/7/365. As such, we have people arriving at the center at all hours day and night.

Often service members and their families flights have been delayed. To accommodate them, we have showers, laundry facilities and sleeping quarters available. However, since most of their toiletries are all ready packed up the service members need toiletries provided to them.

We would like to thank t he Daughters of the American Revolution Cascade Chapter,  for stopping by to drop off a donation of travel-size toiletry kits this month. It's the support of our partners that allows us to deliver on our mission each day. Thank you for helping us better serve our traveling military and being the Force Behind The Forces.
THE USO NEEDS YOUR HELP

As previously mentioned the USO Northwest Sea-Tac Airport Center is one of the busiest USO Centers in the United States and one of the few 24/7/365 centers. The only way we are able to serve 160,000 military and family members each year is our amazing volunteers.

We need your help to fill some of the "Hero Shifts" early morning and night shifts. Please click on the link below to find out more!

Shali Center
July No-Dough Dinner:

Our No Dough Dinners provide a free meal once a month for service members and families of Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

It is a unique and uplifting opportunity to bring together friends and neighbors in a casual, family-friendly environment. Military parents get a night off from kitchen duty and the military children have a chance to make new friends, all while enjoying a healthy meal provided by the volunteers and staff of the USO-NW Shali Center.

July's No Dough Dinner was on the 29th from 1800-2000 at the USO Shali Center and we brought in Serius Wood Fire Pizza (a food truck) to provide fresh pizza. In addition, we invited the Airman and families of the 67th Airlift Command. We are returning to the old format of inviting individual units each month for an evening meal to ensure family members can attend. If you are stationed in the Northwest and think your unit might be interested email [email protected].

This month’s No Dough Meal was sponsored by Steve and Cathie Berger, Proud supporters of the USO Northwest.
Camp Lewis Center
Coffee Connections

The  USO Northwest  held our Coffee Connections for Military Spouses at the Camp Lewis Center on July 18th.

USO Coffee Connections allow spouses to relax in a comfortable setting, share advice, learn about local events, and make new friends over a cup of coffee and pastries.

Twelve spouses enjoyed the July event, which once again featured a goody bag giveaway, a raffle drawing and more!
Join the USO each month as we host small gatherings for military spouses to connect with each other while enjoying a cup of coffee. This is a great way to share advice, discuss local events, and meet new friends!

Our next Coffee Connection will be hosted at the Camp Lewis Center (Located inside America's Credit Union on Lewis Main) on August 19th, 2019 at 10:00 AM.

July No-Dough Dinner:

July's No-Dough Dinner was held on July 11th from 1800-2000 at our Camp Lewis Center.

We were joined by families across  Joint Base Lewis-McChord  for a summer grill out prepared by USO Volunteers.

This month's No Dough Dinner was sponsored by  Tito's Handmade Vodka , a proud supporter of the USO Northwest and our military.

On behalf of the service members and their families we serve, we thank  Tito's Handmade Vodka  for their generous support.

Helping Hands Program:

The Helping Hands Program enables our military to spend valuable time together with their families as a unit. May's distributed funds supported unit volunteer appreciation luncheons, family readiness meetings, a unit bowling event, unit balls, and family picnics.

The Camp Lewis Center is the distribution hub for our Helping Hands Program. This month we provided checks to 7 unit events totaling over $1,650.00.
Portland Center
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Military Appreciation Night:

The USO supported the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Minor League Baseball Team) Military Appreciation Night on the 4th of July.

They had a special ceremony for Corporal Ian Tawney (OEF KIA) as part of their overall remembrance of all that paid the ultimate sacrifice. It was a inspiring night with the pre-game ceremony, then the game. After the game, there was a Howitzer volley of shots then a fireworks display.

The USO was able to set up our table was on the 3rd base side right on the main walkway.  As you can see, we brought Marlowe, our service dog in training with us. She was a hit with the fans and was wearing her USO bandanna.
Mobile Center
Starbucks Military Family Store Dedication:

The USO Northwest's area of operation includes all of Washington and Oregon. Our four centers do a great job in the Puget Sound Region as well as in the Portland area.

However, we have three Mobile USOs to ensure we can serve the military and their families across our entire AO. That is why when we got the call that our partner Starbucks was opening another of their Military Family Stores in Eastern Washington we knew we had to go support it.

The dedication ceremony was on Thursday July 25th, for the Airway Heights, WA Starbucks Military Family Store (near  Fairchild Air Force Base ). We brought our Mobile USO across the state to support the event. “Military Family Stores” are staffed primarily by veterans and military spouses as part of Starbucks effort to employ service members and their families nationwide.

In addition, this  Starbucks  has chosen the USO Northwest as their local military charity to support and donated $10,000 from the store!

Starbucks continues to be a steadfast partner of not only the  USO Northwest, but the entire military community as they have reached their goal of hiring 25,000 veterans, service members, and their families 6 years early.

Our three Mobile USOs serve our military and their families at more than 300 events each year – expanding our reach and the number of service members and their families we serve.

You will find our Mobile USOs at
pre-deployment parties, homecoming celebrations, unit activities on military installations and many other special event activities throughout Washington and Oregon.

USO Northwest is not a government agency. We rely on donations from individuals like you -- to support the programs that have the most impact on the lives of our military service members.

Thanks to YOU, USO Northwest served over 800,000 service members and their families last year -- but we didn't do it alone.

You donation will enable USO Northwest to continue to offer the programs that have the greatest impact for our military and their families.

Your support does make an impact as 91¢ out of every $1 you donate to the USO Northwest goes directly to serve our service members and their families.
