This year’s tournament had everything all packed in one day, including recognition of the 6 Military Golf Teams, a flyover by the Blackjack Squadron of Arlington WA, silent and live auctions, and more food and drink than ever before. We would like to congratulate the National Guard Team, who won our “Military Event” with a score of 57. Their golfer names will be engraved on the “Chairman’s Military Cup” trophy. While the Marine Corps team didn't walk away with a victory this year, they did carry on the proud tradition of a golf cart mishap as seen in the provided photo.

We also would like to congratulate the Anheuser Busch Team , who won a “scorecard playoff” over the Mariners and Team Columbia/Miller Coors, taking first place overall with an impressive score of 53... read full press release HERE

May No-Dough Lunch:

June's No-Dough Lunch was on the 14th from 1100-1300 at the USO Shali Center and was open to all active-duty military and their families.

It is a unique and uplifting opportunity to bring together friends and neighbors in a casual, family-friendly, environment. Military parents get a night off from kitchen duty and the military children have a chance to make new friends, all while enjoying a hearty meal provided by the volunteers and staff of the USO-Northwest.

This meal was sponsored by Barry Sherman and Chris Reigelsperger of NECA, Puget Sound Chapter, proud supporters of the USO Northwest.

Operation Cookie Drop 2.0:

The USO Northwest received an additional shipment of Girl Scout Cookies this month!

Units and family readiness groups descended on our Shali Center from Monday June 7th until Wednesday June 9th. We even have enough left over to give out to service members visiting our centers for the next several months.

Thank you to the Girl Scouts of America for your continued generosity in supplying our service members and their families delicious cookies that they get to enjoy for months to come.
Camp Lewis Center
Coffee Connections

The USO Camp Lewis Center held its Coffee Connections for Military Spouses again this month.

USO Coffee Connections is a casual, monthly touch point which provide a networking event for our Military Spouses. These monthly gatherings allow spouses to relax in a comfortable setting, share advice, learn about local events, and make new friends over a cup of coffee and pastries.

The military spouses who enjoyed the June event were treated once again with goody bag giveaways, a raffle drawing, and more!

Join the USO each month as we host small gatherings for military spouses to connect with each other while enjoying a cup of coffee. This is a great way to network, share advice, discuss local events, and meet new friends!

Our next Coffee Connection will be hosted at the Camp Lewis Center (located inside America's Credit Union on Lewis Main) on July 18th, 2019 at 10:00 AM.

Camp Lewis No-Dough Dinner:

This was the first No-Dough Dinner of the summer at Camp Lewis. The weather cooperated and we were able to hold an BBQ in America's Credit Union Parking lot just outside of the center from 1830-2000.

This was attended by families and children and they even walked away with some bonus Girl Scout Cookies. The No-Dough Dinners are a unique and uplifting opportunity to bring together friends and neighbors in a casual, family-friendly, environment. Military parents get a night off from kitchen duty and the military children have a chance to make new friends, all while enjoying a hearty meal provided by the volunteers and staff of the USO-Northwest.

The meal was was sponsored by Tito's Handmade Vodka, a proud supporter of the USO Northwest.

Oregon Honor Flight:

June saw the USO Portland Center support another Honor Flight. This flight supported veterans from veterans from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam who will be flying to Washington DC where they visit museums and memorials.

Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.

Of all of the wars in recent memory, it was World War II that truly threatened our very existence as a nation—and as a culturally diverse, free society. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.
The Military Order of the Purple Heart:

The USO Portland Center supports the local chapter of of the the Military Order of the Purple Heart and finds local veteran's whom have wounded in combat and present Purple Heart Belt Buckles to these local Purple Heart Recipients.
Mobile Center
The Mobile USO feeds our Red, White & Blue Golfers.

On Thursday, June 27th two of the Mobile USO's descended upon the Golf Club at Newcastle to feed over 400 golfers before the tournament kicked off. Special thanks to Retired Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Bob Clark for preparing and serving enough pulled pork feed an army...in addition fed soldiers from the actually US Army as well as service members from every branch of the armed forces.

Lastly we drove out our Blue Mobile USO to hole 9 on Coal Creek to provide additional sustenance to golfers as they reached the halfway point of golf that day.

Program Spotlight
Helping Hands Program:

Our Helping Hands Program is very unique, as USO Northwest is the only USO in the world to offer it! The program was established when USO-NW recognized the critical need for our military to spend valuable time together with their families as a unit and that our service members had minimal funds available to provide these much needed activities. Compounding the issue is the fact that fundraising by military members is prohibited.

When traditional funding sources are not available or insufficient to cover the entire cost of a unit’s activity or event, USO-NW’s Helping Hands Program provides small funding awards to help offset the cost of the activity. Welcome home celebrations, pre-deployment parties, family day picnics and holiday parties are just a few examples of the family-focused activities that our Helping Hands Program makes possible.

This month our Helping Hands Program provided checks to 10 unit events totaling over $2,500.00.

SFC Lori Streater from the JBLM Culinary Lab demonstrated three simple, healthy microwavable recipes to Soldiers in 1-2 SBCT. The Soldiers learned about principals of food safety to follow when cooking, and got tips on easy meal prep in the barracks. They got to sample a microwave chicken tortilla soup, microwave turkey meatballs, and microwave apple strudel.

"Thank you for your support to help make this event possible!"
