|
Unfortunately, as I’m sure many of you are aware, another group put their event on top of our May Event Dates.
Since the May Event was created to unite the industry, the last thing we wanted to do was to split the industry, so we made the tough decision and moved our dates to the following week.
MAY EVENT 2023

While the dates are not our usual 1st weekend of May, we want to assure that you we are going to make this one more fun & educational than ever!

Misconceptions of Text Message Marketing
When we are at tradeshows or talking with retailers, one of the biggest questions we ask is, “Do you currently have a SMS or texting program in place inside your store? We commonly get the response, “We don’t want to overwhelm our customers” or “No, we never have for XYZ reason.”
Today, I want to hit on the misconceptions of SMS marketing and also give you some data from the texting provider we use at Omni across their client base as well. The first example I want to give you is the average consumer ONLY chooses to receive SMS messages from 2-3 brands based on industry data inside retail. What does this really mean?
You want to be an early adopter, or you will struggle to get consumers on your texting club. Our average client has 1,000+ people on a texting club and sees on average a 3% purchase rate. Another quick stat is that ONLY 60% of brands currently have an SMS strategy. You could be ahead of nearly half your competitors if you have a program. From our internal metrics at Omni and talking with hundreds of retailers, we estimate only 25% of the small business community has a texting strategy. Get on it and grow your business!
Lastly, SMS drives purchases sooner. 80% of people who buy from a text message weren’t going to purchase in the next 30 days. It drives repeat purchases for a much lower acquisition cost than any other medium.
So, where do you start? Simple, using a texting provider like Klaviyo, the one we use at Omni. They allow you to get a free toll-free number and text up to 150 people on your list FREE! That’s right, 0 dollars to start generating a couple thousand dollars a month in additional revenue.
So, get started, get your free toll-free number, and begin your program. Get a sign for in-store and start asking people to join. You don’t need to give them a discount but tell them will are going to send them exclusive offers and early releases on new shoes. That’ll do the trick!
Now the only question is, how will you grow your shoe business using text message marketing?

THE BEST APPROACH FOR 2023
Aren’t you sick of hearing all these financial pundits talking about what they think will happen in the beginning of 2023? Some say inflation, some say recession. Some say market adjustment, some say back to normal. They all like to point to a graph or two as support for their argument, but in the end, they don’t really know, and I don’t know that this affects us in our day to day lives as independent retailers.
As for me, I have been working with independent retailers like you for more than 30 years. And here’s what I’ve noticed.
There is one thing, and one thing ONLY that drives cash into your business. Look at this chart:
|
|
Let me walk you through this. If you have a store doing $1 million in sales, and you are turning your inventory 2.5 times per year, you’re doing OK. But if you could improve those turns by just a half turn, you’d put $41,000 in your pocket. Why? Because it would be money in the bank, not on your sales floor/stock room.
And, if you could improve it a full turn, you’d put $69,000 in your pocket.
Either of those would pay for lots of stuff: additional staff, remodeling the store, more aggressive marketing programs to grow sales, etc.
All the other stuff that people talk about, such as e-commerce, social media, loyalty programs, etc., are great things, but YOU PAY FOR THEM BY INCREASING YOUR TURNS. Do you see that?
But how do you do it? How do you get faster turns? First of all, you have to know how to measure turns properly in your business. Peter Drucker once said that you cannot improve what you cannot measure. Are you measuring your turns? Does your POS help you do that? If not, reach out to me and I’ll help you with the math, for free.
And the second, most important step, is planning your sales and your purchases/inventory to achieve those faster turns. You can’t just say, “I’m going to turn faster, I’m going to buy better,” you have to have a plan that enables you to see the numbers, take action, and measure the results.
I thought I understood this when I was in the point of sale business. I had a hint of it, but didn’t really get it until I started working in planning with guys like you. When I saw how powerful it was, the light went on, and my life (and my clients’ lives) changed forever.
Let me know if you want to know more. And we are currently running a special where you can get your first month of planning absolutely free!

5 Issues to Watch in the Year Ahead
After two years where business developments were dominated by impacts from a global pandemic — everything from supply chain costs to hiring and product availability — the world is faced with embracing the Year of the Rabbit with plenty of challenges. Some are new. Some are recurring. All will force retailers and brands to confront them to maintain their respective businesses, increase profitability, and embrace the evolving demands of footwear consumers in the U.S. and abroad.
1. A Recessionary Environment?
Fears of a recession in 2022 contributed to the worst performance year for U.S. stocks since 2008. Analysts are split on the severity and impact of any 2023 recession, but nearly all believe it will occur. And the Federal Reserve’s ongoing effort to bring down inflation, in part by raising interest rates at regular intervals, has CEOs and business leaders increasingly confident that a recession — generally defined as a decline in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over two consecutive quarters — is on the horizon.

Hoka Is Stealing More Running Market Share as Brand Hits $1B in Sales During Last 9 Months
Deckers Brands is showing no signs of letting its foot off the gas when it comes to its two super star footwear brands, Hoka and Ugg.
On Thursday, the Goleta, Calif.-based company reported net sales in the third quarter of 2023 of $1.346 billion, an increase of 13.3% compared to the $1.188 billion seen the same quarter last year.
The gains were due in large part to Hoka, which saw net sales jumping 90.8% to $352.1 million in Q3 compared to $184.6 million in same time last year, another quarterly record for the brand. Just two quarters ago, Hoka achieved $1 billion of revenue on a trailing 12-month basis. And with the quarter just delivered, the brand has now eclipsed $1 billion of revenue over the last nine months.
