Welcome to the first edition of the USS Groton Sail Monument Newsletter, a communication designed to keep you informed of the USS Groton Sail Foundation’s progress as we build The Groton Sail Monument.
This monument will include the sail and rudder from the USS Groton (SSN694) which was built at Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, CT. The monument will also include a plaza, memorial walkway, storyboard plaques and additional informative and educational features. The monument will be located adjacent to the Groton Public Library.

Provided the funding to purchase the land,
Worked with a landscape architect to complete the site design,
Acquired the site approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission
Where are we now?
The Board of Directors has recently approved a timeline and project budget which would see the project finished by November of 2025. To that end, by the end of 2024, we expect to:
Prepare the sail and rudder: the first step in creating presentable artifacts for display
Complete the design of the exhibits
Obtain construction proposals
What’s Next?
In the months ahead the Foundation will be working full steam ahead to complete our fundraising goal of $2.5 million. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization we’ll be working with businesses both large and small, as well as individuals to raise the funds we need to complete this project. We will be focused on restoration of the ship’s sail and rudder as well as constructing the site, all with an eye toward a November 2025 completion.

Buy a Paver. Our project includes pavers which can be used to honor individuals. Choose from one of ten logos and add your own text. Whether you want to memorialize your own efforts or those of a friend, co-worker, or loved one, you can purchase a paver which will be part of the walkway.
You can make a direct contribution. Donations of any size are welcome and appreciated as well as being fully tax deductible. Our website contains a full list of levels of giving. Donations of $1000 or more will be listed on our donor wall.
