Rural Mental Health Survey

In 2017, nearly 38,000 persons of working age (16–64 years) in the United States died by suicide, which represents a 40% rate increase in less than two decades. One of the five major industry groups with suicide rates higher than the study population included agriculture. In fact, 36.1% of the total number of suicides was represented within agricultural professions.

Through recent needs assessments across the state of Utah, USU Extension has found that many Farmers and Ranchers are seeking help with mental health, mental illness, and suicide. Although some resources currently exist, none are specific to Farming/Ranching. We would like to develop workshops and resources to raise awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma, and promote coping skills (such as help-seeking). We know that these resources can and will help save lives.

To make sure these resources are tailored to your needs, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please complete this survey and share it with friends and family.

Survey participants will be eligible to win one of the following:

Livestock Bundle
(Hat, Vet Wrap, Cattle Prod, Gloves)

Camp Cook Bundle
(Dutch Oven, Dutch Oven Case, Cooking Utensils)

A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture adds to a growing body of research showing that rural areas will be burdened by the effects of the virus — unemployment, overall life satisfaction, mental health, and economic outlook— for many years to come. Tom Mueller, a USU assistant professor of sociology, published a paper in the January Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that focused on the impacts of COVID- 19 on rural communities of the American West. Data from these reports underline the importance of considering the needs of rural areas in future economic recovery policies.
