Time for EU to Recognize the Developments in the Kerch Strait
as an Open Act of Aggression
President Poroshenko Website, Dec 13, 2018

" ... I am very grateful for your statement and for the EU's position in support of my country. Yesterday, we had an opportunity to hear the statement of the European Parliament, which was supported by 433 members of the EP and demonstrated that it was an act of aggression against Ukraine. This is not a provocation, this is not a crisis. This is an act of aggression that falls entirely under UN General Assembly resolution 3314 adopted in 1974," the President said.

Completely Fulfilling Demands on Reform Implementation,
President Poroshenko meets with Vice-President of the European Commission
President Poroshenko Website, Dec 13, 2018

" ... President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko discussed the implementation of reforms in Ukraine and the support of the European Union for the Euro-Atlantic development vector of our country.

...   Putin hates European success of Ukraine. This is an additional motivation for us to be more resolute in the reforms, the return of Ukraine to the family of European nations. We very much appreciate the position of the European Commission, the Vice-President that the door for Ukraine should remain open," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

The President thanked for the decision to provide another tranche of macro-financial assistance to Ukraine. "This symbolizes the support for Ukraine in difficult times and will contribute to financial stability. This, as well as the future decision of the IMF, will provide additional confidence to investors who are planning to come to Ukraine," he said ..."     CLICK to read more

USUF Joins AmCham
Promoting the Foundation's Biotech Initiative

Kyiv, December 6, 2018 - U.S.-Ukraine Foundation representatives attended the annual U.S. Chamber of Commerce members meeting - and learned that membership has clear benefits.

"Being a part of AmCham provides the Foundation with access to a whole network of resources that can help us implement USUF projects," according to Mr. Bilynskyj.
USUF Vice President, Markian Bilynskyj, with American Chamber of Commerce President, Andriy Hunder, at the 2018 AmCham annual general meeting

"The most obvious "project beneficiary" is our Biotech Initiative .  We now have a platform," he continued, "for approaching legal and consulting firms that are AmCham members and discussing cooperation to provide the kind of advice to help Ukrainian biotech entities confidently enter into partnerships with their American counterparts."

AmCham Ukraine has over 650 members, the vast majority of whom, according to a real-time poll conducted during the annual general meeting, plan to increase their investment and activity (and even increase salaries!) in Ukraine in 2019.

"We are delighted to be part of AmCham," said USUF Board Chairman Roman Popadiuk. "AmCham provides another platform from which the Foundation can continue its work in helping build Ukraine's future. Our new biotech initiative is aimed at assisting young experts and start ups to develop their capabilities and AmCham has the business acumen and membership to greatly assist in this process. I am especially pleased that in our conversations with AmCham there was enthusiasm to be involved in the biotech initiative."

<<<<  A day earlier, Mr. Bilynskyj spoke about USUF's Biotech Initiative before the participants of a conference (see photo below) on   "Innovative Methods for the Molecular and Genetic Analysis of Different Varieties of Plants."

The half-day conference-seminar was attended by approximately 150 specialists in agricultural biotechnology and the number of inquiries, after Mr. Bilynskyj's presentation, again confirmed that the USUF Biotech Initiative represents a genuinely new approach to creating and nurturing promising U.S.-Ukrainian partnerships in this underdeveloped and investment-starved sphere.

The event was organized by  BioLabTech , a Ukrainian supplier of laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables for diagnostics and research in the field of molecular biology and genetics, as well as for quality control of products in agriculture, food and pharmaceutical industries.

How Ukraine Can Begin to Catch Up with the EU
By Ivan Miklos and Pavlo Kukhta, Atlantic Council, Nov 28, 2018

Two major risks are clouding Ukraine's economy and holding back investment and economic growth.

One of them is politics. In 2019, the country will hold both presidential and parliamentary elections, in the spring and autumn, respectively. These will be the second elections since the 2014 revolution, and their outcomes will determine whether the country continues on its current course of modernization and integration with the West, or whether it will slide back into stagnation.

With such high stakes, it is no wonder that most investors are cautious and prefer to wait for the elections' results before investing their money in the Ukrainian economy. This is clearly illustrated by a recent  survey of investorsconducted by Dragon Capital, the European Business Association, and the Center for Economic Strategy: 28 percent of investors think now is the optimal time to invest, while 64 percent prefer to wait until after the elections. These results are true for both strategic and portfolio investors. Investment is the primary driver of economic growth in Ukraine: if investors become cautious and adopt a "wait and see" approach, this will slow down growth.

The second major risk overhanging the economy and discouraging investment is the period of peak foreign debt payments that Ukraine ...  CLICK  to read more

Google's DeepMind predicts 3D shapes of proteins
AI program's understanding of proteins could usher in new era of medical progress
By Ian Sample, The Guardian, Dec 2, 2018

" ... The arcane nature of "protein folding", a mind-boggling form of molecular origami, is rarely discussed outside scientific circles, but it is a problem of profound importance. The machinery of biology is built from proteins and it a protein's shape defines its function. Understand how proteins fold up and researchers could usher in a new era of scientific and medical progress.

"For us, this is a really key moment," said Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of DeepMind. "This is a lighthouse project, our first major investment in terms of people and resources into a fundamental, very important, real-world scientific problem ..."    CLICK to read

Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
One Woodrow Wilson Plaza / 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20004

As part of a nationwide series of reforms, Ukraine has introduced a new law reforming its electricity market. This law provides an opportunity to synchronize the Ukrainian energy system with the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and integrate Ukraine within the European market. Why are these reforms important, and what are the benefits, drawbacks, and potential outcomes for Ukraine and its neighbors? This panel will address these questions and will discuss the findings of the new report "Electricity Market Reforms in Ukraine: Challenges and Opportunities," which provides assessments of both the hypothetical success and failure of electricity market reform in Ukraine.
Speakers:    Vsevolod Kovalchuk, CEO, State Enterprise National Power Company, Ukrenergo;
Mykhailo Bno-Airiian, Deputy CEO for Communications and International Cooperation of National Power Company Ukrenergo; and, Andrian Prokip, Senior Associate, Ukraine, Kennan Institute; Energy Expert, Ukrainian Institute for the Future
