Leadership and Talent Development Guide

New antique medicine display at Outpatient Clinic

At the beginning of each year, staff in the Special Collections Library & Archives exchange the items on display in the Outpatient Building on West Campus, and our newest exhibit features selections of antique medicine cases and medicines from our Medical Artifacts Collection. Several pieces were previously displayed in the main library, but by moving these items to the Outpatient Building, we are able to share the archives with more of our campus community.

The medicine cases on display were used by traveling doctors and doctors making house visits to transport the common medications they used in their practices. Additionally, there is a travel-sized hypodermic needle kit and an emergency snake bite first aid kit. The bottles on display range from "snake oil salesman"-style tinctures to common medicine cabinet finds from the early 20th century. This range captures the long history of medicine and helps to showcase how far science has come.

New Guide provides central location for leadership resources

The Leadership & Talent Development Guide, created in collaboration with the Talent Development unit of Human Resources, is designed to help UTSW staff enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities. This resource includes curated links to databases, electronic journals, and electronic books on business, management, and leadership. Additionally, it offers recommended websites and training resources focused on healthcare leadership and professional development. The Guide supports the mission of delivering effective learning strategies for all UTSW staff members.

Attention, researchers! Evidence Synthesis Essentials: A Three-Part Instructional Series

Are you considering undertaking a systematic review or another type of evidence synthesis, but you do not know where to start? Are you currently working on a review and need a refresher? If so, your Library is here to help.

The Library's instruction team has adapted the single "Introduction to Systematic Reviews” session into a more digestible series this spring. This 3-part series will guide you through the entire evidence synthesis process: from PICO question formulation and protocol development to systematic searching techniques to data extraction and synthesis. We will highlight databases and tools to assist you and streamline your project.

If you are interested, click on the links below to register for individual sessions. If you cannot attend the sessions, you can still register so that you will receive the recordings.

Institutional Repository hits 10,000 item milestone

The UT Southwestern Institutional Repository now has more than 10,000 items! This significant milestone was achieved when the 10,000th item was uploaded on February 14, 2025, and the specific item is as follows:

Title: Are We Ready for Psychedelic Medicine? (The Daniel W. Foster, M.D., Visiting Lectureship in Medical Ethics)

Presented by: McGuire, Amy L.

Collection: Ethics Grand Rounds

Date of Presentation: February 11, 2025

The UT Southwestern Institutional Repository collects, preserves, and distributes digital material pertaining to the clinical, educational, and research missions of the university.

The Ethics Grand Rounds Collection contains materials (e.g., videos, presentation slides, or handouts) from the UT Southwestern Program in Ethics in Science and Medicine, as well as material from the annual Daniel W. Foster, M.D., Visiting Lectureship in Medical Ethics. The Lectureship, which was established in 2007 in honor of UT Southwestern's Daniel W. Foster, brings distinguished scholars in medical ethics to the UT Southwestern Medical Center campus to present and discuss the challenging moral issues in biomedicine. These lectures offer opportunities for faculty, staff, and trainees to engage and reflect on current medical ethics issues.

US Patent and Trademark Office launches new Open Data Portal

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) launched its new Open Data Portal (ODP) on February 12. This site provides easy access to relevant open and accessible data sets, combining several services into one to quickly access, customize, and extract USPTO data. ODP replaces the Patent Examination Data System (PEDs) and the Bulk Data Storage System (BDSS).
