Grant Mentorship Initiatives

(1) This new department initiative aims to increase participation and provide support for a broader range of grant types, including those submitted by more experienced investigators.

Key details:

• The program will consist of eight 90-minute sessions, beginning the week of March 17, 2025.
• Applicable to NIH, DOD, and other federal or foundation grants submitted on or after June 1, 2025. Investigators submitting other types of grants who want to participate will be may also be included on a case-by-case basis.
• Participants will submit grant sections (e.g., background, research strategy) to the facilitator and a peer reviewer at least 48 hours before each session.
• Both verbal and written feedback will be provided.

(2) To foster success, the department will also be implementing a formal review process. This review will be mandatory for those meeting the definition of an NIH New Investigator (grant applicants who have not yet competed successfully for a substantial, competing NIH research grant) and optional for others.

Key Details:

• Applicable to NIH, DOD, and other federal grants submitted on or after June 1, 2025.
• A nearly complete application (not a rough draft) must be submitted electronically at least 30 days prior to the grant's due date.
• Relevant grant details (e.g., PAR or other guidance documents) should accompany the submission.
• Applications will undergo peer review, by at least two faculty members in Psychiatry. Based on the topic, reviewers may also include faculty from other UTSW departments or external institutions.
• A written critique will be provided within 10 calendar days

International Play Therapy Week

February 2-8 is International Play Therapy Week! Play therapy is an evidence-based counseling intervention for children. To celebrate, Autumn Brown, LCSW, RPT-S, Sara Loftin, LPC-S, RPT-S, Michelle Yoo, LPC-Associate, and Alexis Santa-Cruz, LPC-Associate will deliver baskets filled with treats to various units and providers at Children’s. There will also be other events throughout the week, please email our team if you are interested in more information.

Women's Health Research Initiative Spring Forum Abstract Submission

The Women's Health Research Initiative invites you to submit abstracts for the 2025 Spring Forum  to be held on April 17. This forum is an opportunity to showcase the ongoing work in Women's Health Research at UTSW and provide a chance for members of the UTSW community to interact and get to know others working within this field.

IMPACT Faculty Development Program

The IMPACT program for clinician educators is a new opportunity designed to support junior faculty who have academic career interests in medical education. Participants will benefit from a series of workshops, mentorship opportunities, and hands-on projects that will significantly contribute to their professional growth.

Autism Research Program Anticipated Funding for FY25

The FY25 Defense Appropriations Act is anticipated to provide funding for the Au­tism Research Program to support research of exceptional scientific merit and innovation with high impact that focuses on autism. A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the electronic Biomed­ical Research Application Portal (eBRAP) prior to the pre-application deadline. All applications must conform to the final funding opportunity announcements that will be available for downloading from the Grants.gov website. Submission deadlines are not available until the funding opportunity announcements are released.

Elizabeth Heitman, Ph.D., was elected to the University of Texas System's Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education.

Sebastian Choi, Ph.D., received a funding award from the NIH for his research in the analysis of ascending spinal pain circuits.

Jeffrey Schaffert, Ph.D., received the 2024 Hydrocephalus Association Network or Discovery Science (HANDS) Neuropsychology & Cognition Award.

Our Neuropsychology Clinic has been granted the Team Excellence Award, which is given to assist in enhancing teamwork and engagement. Congratulations!

Hudaisa Fatima, a doctoral student, was selected to receive the Steven O. Walfish Award on behalf of the American Psychological Foundation.

Christian Monsalve, M.D., was selected as a recipient of the Austen Riggs Award for Excellence in Psychotherapy that recognizes the development of psychiatric residents who have demonstrated ability in psychodynamic psychotherapy and/or psychiatry.

Laura Howe-Martin, Ph.D., has been selected to serve in support of the American Psychological Association as an Associate Member of the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education Review Committee.

Takashi Kitamura, Ph.D., has been selected as a recipient of UT Southwestern's Special Grant Incentive (SGI) Award, which provides funding of $10,000.

Yingxi Lin, Ph.D., has each been selected as a recipient of UT Southwestern's Special Grant Incentive (SGI) Award, which provides funding of $10,000.

Abhisek Khandai, M.D., has been elected as a Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association Board of Trustees.
