The Interventional Psychiatry Division encompasses multiple neuromodulation treatments for psychiatric conditions such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), magnetic seizure therapy (MST), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and now Intracranial Stimulation (IS). Personalized neuromodulation therapeutics are becoming increasingly important and involve the use of brain imaging approaches to inform the unique brain region(s) involved in neuropsychiatric condition to be treated. This approach, for instance, can purportedly change an antidepressant response rate of 50% to 80% with TMS. It turns out that there is enough variability in brain circuitry and neuronal activity across individuals that it is clinically useful to define “personal” pathology before targeting it with neuromodulation interventions.

Spotlight on... Shawn McClintock, Ph.D. |
|
Shawn McClintock, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, holds the Lydia Bryant Test Distinguished Professorship in Psychiatric Research and is the Director of Research Training for the Clinical Psychology Graduate Program. He specializes in clinical neuropsychology and neuromodulation antidepressant intervention development.
Dr. McClintock earned his doctorate in clinical psychology at UT Southwestern, where he stayed to complete a National Institute of Mental Health research fellowship and a clinical fellowship in neuropsychiatry. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical sciences from UT Southwestern.

What motivated you to get into medicine?
"From as far back as I can remember, I always loved science and medicine. In early education, science was my favorite subject in school, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on any new science books or work on experiments in chemistry. In high school, while working as a nurses aid at our local hospital, I got to meet so many health care professionals and see them help patients and their families. I knew then that medicine was the field for me. As the first member of my family to go to college, I was fortunate to have incredible and supportive mentors who helped me along my educational and career journey to get to the place in my career where I am today."
What do you love about your job?
"I feel like I grew up at UT Southwestern given that I started my Master’s program here in 1999 and that it has become my home. I am so fortunate that I get to work at an incredible academic medical center doing the things that I love to do, such as seeing patients, mentoring students, and conducting research investigations. Moreover, I get to work alongside and learn from brilliant colleagues across multiple disciplines in a thriving academic environment where there is always something new on the horizon!"

Jeethu Joseph (pictured below, bottom right) started in psychiatry in 2015 as an undergraduate intern, later hired as a clinical data specialist for the center for depression research and clinical care, where she continued until she started the clinical psychology Ph.D. program in 2018, from which she will graduate in August. Jeethu's mother, Lissamma John (pictured below, top left) began working at Parkland 1993-1994 as a PCA, then RN/BSN on the burn unit 1997-2021, and is now at the Moody Outpatient Clinic as a nurse navigator. Jeethu's father, Joseph Varghese (pictured below, top right) has worked at Clements since 2018 as a sterile processing technician. Older sister Neethu Joseph (pictured below, top middle) started at Clements in 2020 as a PA and now works on the internal medicine team. Younger sister Preethu Joseph (pictured below, bottom left) started at Clements in 2020 as a patient care tech and then rotated through Parkland for nursing school clinicals. She joined Parkland as a nurse resident in 2021 on the trauma and general surgery unit, where she currently works. |

Project ECHO will meet six times every other Monday, except for Tuesday 5/31, following Memorial Day, from 12:15 pm-1:15 pm, starting April 4 and concluding June 13. Each meeting offers a brief CME on a predetermined topic and then offers participants an opportunity to bring forth a patient or case for discussion. Participants are asked to commit to attend all sessions virtually. There will be another series hosted in the Fall, so stay tuned for information on the times and topics. |

Help teach medical students in the simulation lab on select Tuesdays during clerkship didactics (2:00-4:30pm May 3 and June 14).
Tasks:
- Being the voice of the manikin (robot patient)
- Facilitating medical student interaction with the manikin and helping out when students get stuck on a step
- De-briefing with students after the activity

UT-FOCUS Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists |
|
The UT Southwestern Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists ( UT-FOCUS) program provides financial, career development, and wellness support to retain early career physician-scientists who need additional assistance due to caregiving responsibilities exacerbated by COVID-19. Five early career physician-researchers are the first awardees to receive support from the program. The next round of applications opens in June. To be eligible, program applicants must be physician-scientists with an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent degree who are full-time Instructors, Assistant Professors, or Associate Professors at a rank of one year or less with at least 50% effort allocated to research with a high potential to improve human health. |

UT Southwestern Psychiatry was well represented at the recent annual meeting of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP)!
- Alex Rollo and Cassie Jones were psychiatry resident scholars.
- Kayla Murphy, incoming med/psych resident, was a medical student scholar (and welcomed into our UTSW community).
- Chad Lane co-chaired the AAGP Scholars Program, which had over 50 scholars, with pre and post surveys showing the scholars' interest in geriatric psychiatry doubled as a result of the program.
- Michael Li, current geri-psych fellow and soon-to-be VA Silver Team attending, presented the poster "The Sound of Music: Short-Term Effects of Live Music Performance on the Cognitive and Emotional Statuses of Residential Patients with Major Neurocognitive Disorder."
- Lessley Chiriboga, current geri-psych fellow and soon-to-be BL7 attending, supported the medical student and resident scholars.
- Audrey Eichenberger, an AAGP Scholar in 2021, supported the current scholars and advised incoming resident Kayla Murphy.
- Molly Camp served on the Nominating Committee and Teaching and Training Committee and had mentor meetings with her two assigned scholars.
