December 21, 2022
Holiday Greetings to Psychiatry and Psychiatry Friends. It has been a wonderful December with positive adventures throughout. The ground-breaking for the Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern with its 200 adult and 96 child beds took place on December 5; the event attracted local politicians, Health and Human Services representatives, and UT Southwestern hospital officials. The unexpected increase in the number and quality of physician applicants for our Psychiatry Residency this year was welcomed as we contemplate future needs for the planned hospital. Our Bass building clinical programs completed their final plans to move to the newly renovated Empire Central location in January for a 5-7-year stay. It has been a good year; we extend our wishes to all for a wonderful new year.

State Psychiatric Hospital Groundbreaking Ceremony
Health officials broke ground on the Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern, the state's new psychiatric hospital. This 296-bed facility has been long awaited and will finish construction in 2025. The Center will treat patients who are experiencing acute mental health problems. Along with care, the hospital will increase training for mental health students and professionals, with the ultimate goal of aiming to fill the mental health gap in the community.
Holiday Festivities
Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebration of the holiday season December 16. It was a lovely night filled with great food, music by Dr. Cullum, Dr. Denney, Dr. Thornton, and Dr. Van Wright, and the opportunity to mingle with others in the department. May your holidays be joyful and healthy! We look forward to the new year ahead. View photos from the party.
Farewell
Ahmad Raza, M.D., Ph.D., will be retiring after 17 years of service. He graduated from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1984, coming to the U.S. shortly after to pursue his Ph.D. The initial part of his career focused on schizophrenia research, as well as residency and fellowship at Columbia University and Creedmoor Psychiatric Center. He joined UTSW faculty as Associate Professor and Medical Director of the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit at Zale Lipshy University Hospital in 2005, continuing in that role for 10 years, a gratifying professional and personal experience. He has been involved in the Treatment Resistant Depression clinic and Interventional Psychiatry program the past few years, working with outstanding staff, residents, and students. He plans to remain involved with practicing psychiatry and possibly teaching, traveling, reading a long list of books, and playing tennis.
Mary B. Turner, Ph.D., will be leaving the Richardson Clinical Center's Behavioral Health Group at the end of this month, where much of her work has focused on helping patients adapt to life following trauma and major illness. She came to UTSW as a graduate student in the Division of Psychology in 1986 and joined the faculty in 1990. Following her retirement, she plans to focus on family, travel, and her passions for writing, gardening, and cooking.

Special Education Events
To explore the interface of psychiatry and the visual arts, residents spent an afternoon at the Dallas Museum of Art for a special program titled "The Power of Observation." The afternoon began with a lecture given by Bonnie Pitman, Distinguished Scholar and Director of Art-Brain Innovations, The Center for BrainHealth, The University of Texas at Dallas, on the differences among seeing, looking, and observing, and the practice of scanning, attending, connecting, and transforming in observation. Participants then divided into small groups and rotated through five stations among the museum’s permanent collection, each led by one of the members of the planning group, who selected a piece, presenting and guiding the groups through an experience of active learning and participation. Through selections that included portraits, landscapes, and sculptures, the resident leaders provoked new ways of seeing art and rich explorations of the connections among biography, cultural context, creativity, and mental illness. View more photos from the event.
Our department was well represented at the Perot Museum's 10th Anniversary Celebration. Our community education and engagement initiative, medIDEAS, was showcased through various information stations to more than 5,000 guests, who had the opportunity to learn about mental health, depression, and the brain with Drs. Jane Foster, Cherise Chin Fatt, and the CDRC team (pictured right) through activities including a Play-Doh brain and brain coloring book. Team members from the UT Southwestern and Children’s Health℠ Center for Autism Care, including Katherine Bellone Mount, Ph.D., also engaged children and their families in interactive projects by teaching them about autism and showing them the human brain previously donated to the museum by Dr. Tamminga. Munro Cullum, Ph.D., and the ConTEX team explained concussion symptoms and care as well.

See more photos from the event here.
Fourth year psychiatry residents gathered at Stomping Ground Comedy Theater for a workshop in learning how improv techniques and various group exercises can help translate into behavioral management tools and communication strategies for patients with dementia. It was an afternoon filled with laughter and learning.
Thank you, Dr. Molly Camp, for organizing this event!

American Board of Professional Psychology Resource Committee
The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) Resource Committee (ARC) was established in 2016 with the mission to promote board certification through the ABPP and support faculty by providing resources, mentoring, and education about the process. Board certification in psychology hovers around 5-10% of the field depending on the specialty area. Since the ARC started, it has grown from 25% to around 40% of our faculty. This year, the ARC has been hard at work supporting psychologists and neuropsychologists pursuing board certification by holding workshops, launching a mentoring program, and establishing a resource page under the Psychology Teams page for access to more information.

Email abpp@utsouthwestern.edu for questions and additional information.
