Outstanding faculty with a variety of complementary talents is what makes a medical school department strong.

As you look through this month’s Connections, you will see example after example of outstanding faculty represented by their productivity. Clinicians, clinical scientists, laboratory scientists, educators; what a line up!

I am extremely proud of the work and the interests of our department's Psychiatry and Psychology faculty and all of their contributions to the O’Donnell Brain Institute and UT Southwestern Medical School.

Spotlight on... Robin B. Jarrett, Ph.D., ABPP
Robin B. Jarrett, Ph.D., ABPP, is a Professor of Psychiatry and holds the Elizabeth H. Penn Professorship in Clinical Psychology at UT Southwestern, where her laboratory evaluates the role of psychosocial factors and interventions on the course of health, including mood and related disorders. Dr. Jarrett is a board-certified clinical psychologist who has been continuously active in research, clinical practice, and teaching since 1984. Dr. Jarrett is internationally known for contributions to psychosocial intervention, particularly cognitive-behavioral therapy. Her laboratory published the first positive pill placebo-controlled clinical trial demonstrating that the therapeutic effects of cognitive therapy exceeded pill placebo and did not differ from pharmacotherapy. Findings from her group have helped to create evidence-based practices in psychiatry, psychology, and the biopsychosocial model.
Dr. Jarrett is a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies and a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, and Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM). Dr. Jarrett is the lead psychologist for the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management.

In 2023 Dr. Jarrett completed training and certification as a professional coach for UT Southwestern faculty, staff, and trainees. When asked why she coaches, Dr. Jarrett replied, “People are our most precious asset. I value seeing colleagues develop their full potential through self-reflection, collaboration, and safety. Coaching complements the advising and mentoring available here at UT Southwestern and in the Department of Psychiatry. Coaching positions our faculty, staff, and trainees to grow toward their goals and to contribute fully."

Currently, Dr. Jarrett is authoring a collaborative book on mindful practices. She savors her own mindful practices in Santa Fe, the Texas Hill Country, the Great Smoky Mountains, the Carolina beaches, or “just anywhere.” Besides science, her passions include time with family and friends, mindful Sundays, and walking with nature.
