You will see so many faculty and read about their outstanding activities in this issue. Enough to make any chairman proud! Congratulations to all, and thanks for your hard work. These are welcome vignettes in a challenging month, at least for some, in which we practiced, packed, and then participated in the Bass Decant. All the psychiatry programs located in the Bass Building are moving to a new address at Empire Plaza by the end of January to make room for a new Joint Pediatric Enterprise Children's Hospital. The Empire Plaza buildings have been renovated beautifully and individualized to programs. Everyone who has helped in this effort deserves a round of applause, along with a quiet February. After a recovery month, all at Empire Plaza would appreciate your questions, your interest, and surely your visit. We will keep the coffee fresh. Please come around.

Spotlight On... Chadrick Lane, M.D.
Chadrick Lane, M.D., practices neuropsychiatry, a subspecialty focused on understanding brain-behavior relationships to improve the diagnosis and treatment of people living with complex brain disorders. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Associate Psychiatry Clerkship Director for the Medical School, and the inaugural Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute Clinical Neuroscience Scholar. He completed his adult psychiatry residency and geriatric psychiatry fellowship training at Yale School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at the Boston University/VA Boston Healthcare System. He is a member of the UTSW Epilepsy Team, through which he provides comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments to patients who are being considered for epilepsy surgery. He also supervises resident physicians in the neuropsychiatry clinic elective, and he mentors students and fellows. Dr. Lane is a member of the American Neuropsychiatric Association, through which he works to expand educational opportunities for trainees and recruit the next generation of neuropsychiatrists.
What motivated you to get into medicine?

My mother, one of my heroes, routinely worked 2-3 jobs at a time to support our family. Her most beloved job was working as a private caregiver to older adults in our community. Her clients adored her, and at a young age, I had opportunities to meet them. I fondly remember listening to their stories and memories of triumph, hardship, and resilience. This early experience illustrated what medicine is at its core - the privilege of witnessing another human being's story and, in some large or modest way, helping them author their next chapters.

What do you love about your job?

I once heard a colleague say of his career, "The science brought me here, but the patients kept me." These words profoundly resonate with me. From my first week as a college student in Psychology 101, I've long been fascinated and humbled by the brain's ability, beauty, and mystery. I have the honor to come to work every day and ponder how 100 billion neurons and over a quadrillion synapses give rise to the mind and, most importantly, doing so to ease another's suffering. Caring for people living with epilepsy has taught me so much through their strength and perseverance, and each of them has become a hero in my eyes.
