September 21, 2022
It is the Fall season in the Department. Grand Rounds is featured again on Wednesdays at noon. Educational programs are back on and active. Healthy voluntary walks are commencing once again and competing for time (the 2022 Dallas Heart Walk is on Saturday, September 24). Here in the Department of Psychiatry, we have turned to our Fall tasks. One is the Faculty Retreat and, this year, the Staff Retreat as well. The Faculty will gather at the Dallas Arboretum, and the Staff will reconnect at the Flight Museum near Love Field. These events will be great opportunities for learning and networking. Special to the Department is the planning work that we are doing for the new State-funded Psychiatric Hospital at UT Southwestern. It is coming to the corner of Harry Hines and Medial District Blvd, with 200 adult beds and 96 children’s beds. It is a season already full of promise.

Awards and Accomplishments
Lina Chalak, M.D., and her research team were awarded a $7 million, 5-year funding from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute that will support multisite clinical research on the use of hypothermia therapy for infants with mild hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This treatment will use a cooling blanket to bring the body temperature of the oxygen deprived baby to as low as 33.5 C (92.3 F), helping protect the brain.

Alexandra Antonioli, M.D., Ph.D., has been selected as a 2023 Laughlin Fellow of The American College of Psychiatrists, an honor given to those deemed likely to contribute significantly to the field of psychiatry.
New Members of UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers

Three Psychiatry faculty members were elected this year to the UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers. They are awarded the title of "Distinguished Teaching Professor," which highlights their continued leadership and contributions in teaching.
Laura Howe-Martin, Ph.D.
Betsy Kennard, Psy. D.
Natalie Lundsteen, Ph.D.
Fourth-year doctoral candidate William Goette, M.S., and his co-sponsors Laura Lacritz, Ph.D., and Munro Cullum, Ph.D., have been awarded a 2-year NIA F31 that will implement novel statistical and psychometric modeling to understand racial and ethnic disparities in memory test performance and diagnostic accuracy for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The proposed techniques hold promise for identifying alternative assessment methods in clinical neuropsychology that could help clinicians and researchers improve and enhance diagnostic accuracy in increasingly diverse settings.
Jessica Orobio, Ph.D. candidate, has been elected as the first-ever Student Representative of the new Bilingual Psychologists Special Interest Group of the APA Division 53 (Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology). She will work alongside other committee members to promote culturally responsive care and research for linguistically diverse families as well as promote the increase in community and professional development for bilingual psychologists and trainees.

The Peter O'Donnell Brain Institute (OBI) has announced three funding opportunities (below) for which Psychiatry faculty are eligible to apply. These internal grant programs support innovative brain research among UTSW scientists. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2022.

  1. Visionary Neuroscience Program (VNP): The VNP grant supports highly innovative new research that, because of its novelty and risk profile, is not suitable for NIH funding. Maximum funding per project is up to $500,000. The grant supports research in either advancing fundamental insight into biology relevant to brain disease or translating scientific discovery into the clinical arena. These research projects must feature OBI Investigators from at least two different departments.
  2. Sprouts Grant Program: Sprouts grants fund the collection of pilot data to explore new research directions that are not easily covered by other sources. The awards are primarily aimed at supporting new ideas from trainees working with OBI Investigators. The program is intended to encourage creative, high-quality research that also advances the training of early-career laboratory or clinical scientists.
  3. Research Interest Group Program: This program is intended to encourage transdisciplinary groups of researchers focused on a shared research area to connect and build working relationships. The goal is to propel collaboration across the breadth of laboratory and clinical brain science at UT Southwestern. We encourage grass roots ideas for creative and productive groups.
