CAL PROFESSOR AMONG WORLD'S MOST INFLUENTIAL RESEARCHERS

Jon Elhai professor of Psychology at The University of Toledo

UToledo CAL Professor of Psychology Jon Elhai has been recognized as one of the most often cited researchers in the world. The distinction recognizes researchers who have authored multiple papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field and publication year during the past decade, as tracked in Clarivate’s Web of Science citation index. Qualitative analysis and expert judgment are also factors. Dr. Elhai and Dr. Yanfa Yan (Physics and Astronomy) were the only two UToledo professors to receive the recognition. Read more...

ART PROFESSOR LAUNCHES SOLO EXHIBITION

Deborah Orloff, professor of photography at The University of Toledo, and a sample of her work from Elusive Memory

The artwork of Deborah Orloff (Department of Art) is on display in a solo exhibition at Brevard College now through Feb. 23. The exhibition, “Elusive Memory and Lost Histories,” incorporates several new pieces that Orloff created in the past year with financial support from a 2022 Arts Commission of Greater Toledo Merit Award.

Orloff, who teaches all levels of photography at UToledo’s Center for Visual Arts, began the series in 2013. Inspired by poorly preserved family photos she discovered following her father’s death in 2007, it explores the complicated relationship between photography and memory. Read more...

CAL DEAN'S EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT RETIRES

Debbie Corkins former executive assistant the dean of the UToledo College of Arts and Letters

Earlier this month, the College of Arts and Letters, sadly, waved goodbye to one of its longest-serving employees. Debbie Corkins retired after 22 years with the University, serving most recently as executive assistant to CAL's interim dean, Melissa Gregory.

Debbie began her career with CAL when it was the College of Arts and Sciences as a Secretary I in the dean’s office. She was also an account clerk in CAS for some time after that. In 2011, Debbie became the dean’s executive assistant and has remained in that role ever since for the College of Arts and Letters.

CAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

PUBLISHING AND CREATIVE WORK

Shingi Mavima (Department of History) has published his second novella, "The Leak," this month. The book was published by Carnelian Heart Publishing Ltd. Synopsis: Kuda, a young man from urban Zimbabwe in pursuit of greener pastures, embarks on a surreal path where he is confronted with familial conflict, disease, dashed hopes, love and camaraderie in the strangest of places, and death.

Rebecca Monteleone (Disability Studies Program) has published two essays: "Complexity as Epistemic Oppression: Writing People with Intellectual Disabilities Back into Philosophy" in "Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy, First View;" (January) and "Wearing Danger: Surveillance, Control and Quantified Healthism in American Medicine," in Balfour, L., "Femtech: Intersectional Interventions in Women’s Digital Health." (February)

CONGRATULATIONS

Sharon Barnes (Women's and Gender Studies) has been appointed to the City of Toledo's CEDAW/Gender Equity Commission as a commissioner, also serving as the secretary of the executive committee. CEDAW is the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Barnes, along with fellow faculty member Abdel Halim, was one of the people who helped organize the local commission, which launched in August of 2023. Almost every country in the world (minus the U.S., Iran, Sudan, Somalia, Nauru, Palau, and Tonga) has signed the convention since its inception in 1979. Because the U.S. refuses to sign, people around the country have organized “Cities 4 CEDAW” campaigns.

Three CAL graduate students, nominated by their advisors, were recognized in December by the University of Toledo's Graduate Council. The students are Kingsley Kanjin (M.A. Geography), Kennedy Lovell (M.A. English), and Michael Vang (Ph.D. Psychology).
