On August 17, 2021, San Mateo County reported a 7-day average of 126 new cases of COVID-19 daily, and the majority of COVID-19 hospitalizations were among the unvaccinated population. Although 89% of San Mateo County residents have completed the COVID-19 vaccination series, that still leaves approximately 60,000 eligible but unvaccinated County residents. On the Coastside both El Granada and Moss Beach estimates of the eligible population who are vaccinated are below the 80% goal for the County. Please continue to support your friends, relatives, and the community by encouraging COVID-19 vaccination. The Touchstones Theme for September is Reason. On Sunday, September 5th, our beloved Bill Heavlin returns to reconsider reason through the lens of improv comedy, in a service entitled "Laughter and the Rich Ground of Reason." And, and, he discovers that reason and improv are both verbs! And he also offers some important insights about the core of Unitarian Universalism. Join us for this Sunday before Labor Day, September 5, at 11am. And bring (or borrow) a smile. Because it's your day off.
Bill Heavlin works as a research statistician in Google’s Accelerated Science group, including research on implicit bias. He has been especially helpful during the production of UUCC's online Zoom services, taking on every role from switching slides to lighting chalices. At home, Bill enjoys painting watercolors and feeding wild birds in his backyard.

On Sunday, September 12th, Rev. Dr. Carrie Knowles brings into perspective the profound relationships that develop as we humans take on pets, and the consequences of sharing our lives with other animals in a sermon entitled "Do We Parent Our Pet—Or Is The Pet Our Parent?"
Rev. Dr. Carrie Knowles considers herself a recovering psychologist and a recovering attorney who sought ministry rather than retirement, graduated with the M. Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry, and was ordained by UUCLC in 2013. She currently serves the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists to provide Pastoral Care and monthly Worship Services, and has been a guest speaker at many Bay Area UU congregations. In her spare time, she writes poetry, short stories, and is working on a memoir.

Do you despair that we appear to live in an “Age of Unreason?” Let’s escape into a somewhat intellectual discussion of reason. What is it and why is it an important topic in the UU world today? Perhaps you will be surprised to learn that it is not all calm waters on the waves of our sources and principles. Come ready to defend your favorite principles from the two-edged sword of reason. If you want to do some homework for our discussion, you could review your dust covered college textbooks on the Age of Reason or review the UU Principles and Sources at this link.
David Rokosky is a longtime Unitarian-Universalist. He is a retired Social Worker. He earned a Master of Social Work degree at Florida State University and was a National Institute of Mental Health Fellow at the University. You might bump into him on the trails in Quarry Park or at a local playground while he is enjoying time with his two granddaughters or while he is tending to garden plots at the Quarry Park Community Garden. He believes that reason and science are our best tools for figuring out what to believe and what purpose we choose to create.

(2) Zoom Session Management: We'd like to train two more people to switch slides during our Zoom virtual services. If you are comfortable working or playing with your favorite computer apps, you'll love learning Zoom's cool features!

UUCC Planning Committee Meeting Highlights |

Below are some key decisions from UUCC's Planning Committee meeting for July:

Current total for the our 6th anniversary fundraiser for ALAS is $1,360. Twenty dollar gift cards will be purchased from Mercado de Familia and given to Dr. Belinda Hernandez-Arriaga for distribution. We are expecting at least $500 more in matching corporate grants to be distributed at a later date.
- The Shared Pulpit Class with 12 active participants is currently underway, taught by Tovis Page and Kathryn Jay. UUCC participants include Diana Luykx, Laurel Frishman, Tricia Dell, Tom Devine, Noreen Cooper Heavlin; and guests Jane Thanx (UUCLC) and Shaun Collins (UUSM). The other six participants are from UU Fellowship of Santa Cruz County.
- Active monitoring of the situation with one of our seniors in need.
