Since 2018, the San Mateo County (SMC) Sheriff’s office has voluntarily transferred at least 119 community members to ICE and in 2020 accounted for 74 percent of the total number of people transferred to ICE for all nine Bay Area counties. Along with many other organizations, the Unitarian Universalist Coastside Community wrote in strong support of ending the voluntary practice of Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) transfers and notifications from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Bolanos has now indicated a plan to cease these transfers. We can assure that this happens by calling upon the SMC Board of Supervisors to pass an ordinance stating that it is county policy that immigrants who have completed their jail sentence NOT be transferred to ICE. Send an email to Supervisor Don Horsley or call 650-363-4569. You can send a letter to Supervisor Don Horsley at 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063.

UUCC Third Sunday Service, November 21st, 11am
|
|
UUCC breaks from our third Sunday Gallery View format to present a full service with our beloved Clovice Lewis on November 21st on the Touchstones theme of Non-Violence.
In “Breaking the Silence With Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Clovice asks us to consider how urgently important King was as the moral conscience of our nation. The subtext underneath many of his speeches and writings was not only an appeal to our collective sanity, but an urgent plea to younger black people to wait just a little bit longer; to trust in the inherent goodness of humanity, and to believe in the power of justice. That is the powerful spiritual legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Paradoxically, it was also the message of Malcolm X, which got lost in the more radical voice of his youth. Once again, we find it necessary to listen to the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. because the warnings, which he sounded about non-violence not so long ago, are still painfully relevant today.
Clovice A Lewis, Jr received a Master of Divinity degree last May from the Starr King School for the Ministry and is now in the process of becoming a Unitarian Universalist Minister. His ministry emphasizes breaking down racial, class, and ethnic barriers, and preaching the gospel of the madness of human self-extinction.
An accomplished cellist, Clovice will play music for this service, accompanied by his wife, Carol Cole-Lewis, on piano. As always, beautiful hymns will be provided by Tom Devine and the UUCC Choir featuring LindaGrace Frost.
Please join us at 11:00 am Pacific, 2pm Eastern.
Gathering for service and music begin at 10:50 am.

National Native American Heritage Month in Nov.
|
|
In honor of National Native American Heritage Month in November, UUCC lights an additional chalice in recognition of the indigenous peoples who cared for this land before the occupation by European settlers:
"UUCC acknowledges that Half Moon Bay is located on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples, recognizes that, as the original stewards of this land, the Ramaytush Ohlone understood profoundly the interconnectedness of all things and maintained for millennia harmony with nature. Today, UUCC honors the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples for their inspiring commitment to Mother Earth."

UUCC First Sunday Service, December 5th, 11am
|
|
The Touchstones Theme for December is Healing. On December 5th, Rev. Summer Albayati will deliver a sermon entitled “Embodied Healing Rituals: Sufi Islam’s Pathway to Peace and Love.” Experts tell us that we are in liminal times and experiencing collective trauma that yearns to be healed. What can we learn from the Sufi Islamic embodiment rituals practiced to bring more healing into our own lives and communities? How can embracing embodied healing help heal and lead us to collective salvation, freedom, peace and love?
Reverend Summer Albayati (she/her) is a UU Muslim of Iraqi descent who has been playing the Arabic drum professionally since the age of 12. In serving congregations, her focus was on transformation by emphasizing that a mission-focused congregation increases vitality, membership, commitment to justice and love. Rev. Summer co-hosts a podcast with her son called “The Bayat Beat,” a commentary on society and culture with an emphasis on social justice. She also has a chapter in the anthology, Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity and Power in Ministry, published by Skinner House. Rev. Summer is currently working on a book regarding Islam, the Qur’an and Liberation Theology. Rev. Summer serves as UUCC's primary contact in the Pacific Western Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

Recipient of December Holiday Fundraiser 2021
|
|
Last year, we raised over $5,000 dollars for the Coastside Adult Day Health Center. This year's all-music holiday festival will be held on Sunday, December 19th, and this year's recipient will be Senior Coastsiders. Senior Coastsiders provides opportunities, support and resources for older adults and adults with disabilities living on the Coastside, from Montara to Pescadero and Skyline to the Sea.
We are looking for musicians to submit either an mp3 audio track or an mp4 video to include in the program. The theme is "All Together for the Holidays." Since Unitarian Universalism is inclusive of all faiths and life-affirming belief systems, we'll leave it to you to decide which December holiday you'd like to honor. Whether it is Christmas Carols (both traditional or secular), Hanukkah songs, Pagan/Wiccan Yule, Pancha Ganapati, Bodhi Day, or Kwanzaa, we'd love to include your music in our program.
The length of the piece should be between 3 and 5 minutes. Please contact Tom Devine, UUCC's Music Director, with your interest in participating in this community event by December 1st. The deadline for submitting your piece will be Friday, December 10th.

We’re looking for volunteers:
(1) Social Media Coordinator: to manage our twice-monthly newsletter, and upload content to our website and Facebook page. A four-hour commitment every two weeks.
(2) Participating in an online service is easier than you think. We are in need of Chalice Lighters and Worship Associates for our Third Sunday Gallery View services. The schedule is lighter and we'll be with every step of the way to make it a pleasant and enriching learning experience.
(3) Fill our newsletter with the diversity that makes UU stand apart from other faiths. Send in poems, inspirational quotes, YouTube music video links, social action notices, and articles of interest to uucoastside@gmail.com.
Thank you to all who have or continue to volunteer!
