Opportunity for Good:
Abundant Grace Coastside Worker supports and advocates for the Coastside homeless community. In addition to providing paid work opportunities for unhoused individuals, they recently have developed an apprentice program in which participants learn entrepreneurial skills. They are making and selling jams, salves and other preserved products, tea and coffee. Stop by the Work Force Center at 515 Kelly or Half Moon Bay stores such as Ink Spell Books and Luz Luna Imports to purchase products and support the homeless community. Contact Eric Debode at eric@abundantgracecw.org for a list of other places you can purchase products to support this new program.
Food for Our Souls:
"Sharing the Pulpit" Sunday, September 18th, 11am
We welcome back David Marsland to the UUCC pulpit on September 18th, with a sermon entitled "Loving Kindness." We live in a world where children can be murdered through guns bought legally. We live in a world where we willfully destroy the future of our children and grandchildren by spewing fossil fuel carbon into the air. We live in a world where peaceful countries are still being invaded. Our world calls out for loving kindness.

In our Unitarian Universalist services we often sing the Metta Chant, an ancient Buddhist loving kindness practice. This service will center on sharing a simple meditation practice of loving kindness. You will have an opportunity to practice loving kindness yourself. Loving kindness towards ourselves, those we know and love, those we don’t know and those we don’t love. Even those whom we find it hard to love. Loving kindness for all beings.

David Marsland participates regularly in the UU Coastside Community along with his wife Verna Barrientos. David has led a previous UUCC service on Climate Action. He loves to bicycle. David has four sons and three granddaughters and wants to do all he can to ensure that they live in a world full of loving kindness.

As a reminder, only 1st Sundays are in-person services for now at Odd Fellows Hall. Until further notice, we will be gathering over Zoom as usual for 3rd Sunday services, including this September 18th.

UUCC In-Person Services Survey
UUCC's Planning Committee is wanting to check in with our Beloved community on how our in-person services are working for you. Questions on the survey include your preferred viewing format, how happy you are with Odd Fellows Hall, whether to continue to check vaccination status at the door, whether to return to in-person coffee hours, and how useful the printed Order of Service has been for you. There will be a place for you to leave your comments on what is working well for you with our return to in-person services or what we can do better. The survey will take less than 5 minutes to fill out and we would greatly appreciate your taking the time to do so. Click here for the link to the survey.
UUCC First Sunday In-Person Service, October 2nd
The Touchstones Themes for October is Awe. And on September 4th, we return to Odd Fellows Hall to hear Bill Heavlin explore “Plato's Cave and Other Waking Moments.” In this wry and meandering meditation, Bill recaps Plato's famous allegory of the cave, and some of its history in Western thought. He also reflects on particular moments drawn from his own life, including his mother, a high school teacher, and a particular professor.

Bill Heavlin is recently retired from a 54-year working career which began as a Fuller Brush salesman at age 13. Subsequent jobs included in high school working halftime as a butcher's assistant, analyzing clinical trail data for young schizophrenics at MRI, designing experiments to make faster microprocessors at AMD, and doing data science research at Google. The next chapter for Bill will be, in his own words, becoming more of a Mensch. Please join Bill and our beloved UUCC Community for our next in-person at Odd Fellows Hall on October 2nd to support Bill's journey towards Mensch-hood.
