"If Nothing's Wrong, Then Nothing's Right"
Rev. Jane Page
Join us on February 1st as we continue the series of sermons based on phrases from Ric Masten's song, Let It Be a Dance! Rev. Jane highlights the phrase, "If nothing's wrong, then nothing's right" in exploring the sometimes complex and sometimes simple possibilities for determining ethical choices.

"From Mockingbird to Watchman: Rethinking Atticus Finch" Clint Tawes
Many of us know and love Atticus Finch from Harper Lee’s beloved classic To Kill a Mockingbird. But in an earlier novel—written before Mockingbird and published much later—Go Set a Watchman, Lee’s portrayal of him is far more complicated and less easy to admire. This sermon draws on those two depictions to explore what happens when the rough draft of our heroes is revealed—and what that can teach us about ourselves and our own Unitarian Universalist tradition: sincere and justice-seeking, yet still imperfect and unfinished.

Beth Sutton
Having recently read; Go Set a Watchman Beth is interested in facilitating a group conversation around the ideas brought up in Clint's sermon and our own thoughts. You don't have to read either book, but you may enjoy the service more if you have.

A LOVE STORY FROM JANE
We are in the midst of UU’s 30 days of Love – so I’m sharing a love story with you today.
“I guess you will be moving back to Statesboro full time when you retire from your congregation in Brunswick in June,” a ministerial colleague shared with me.
“Now why in the world would I do that?” I replied. Greg and I have become not only a part of that congregation, but also a part of the community. And, we love the congregation – and the community. We have two homes, two congregations, and two communities.”
Seriously, I would not leave the people I love without some serious reason. I do hope all of you understand that this is not just a job for me. I have become one of you. And though I will not be your minister after June 30, the love will continue.
Some say this is not healthy. A minister should not fall in love with a congregation. Too late! As one of our members often tells us, “I love y’all and there is nothing you can do about it.” Now BECAUSE I love you, I am trying to do what is healthy for the congregation and step back more often so others can step forward. My retirement will be a transition, for me and for you. And the board and I can work out how we best make that transition during the coming five months. I’ve had a good role model regarding retirement from a long career. Greg retired last June from Georgia Southern. And, I have watched him as he has become more involved in volunteering, service, family relationships, and planning times for us to take a break, travel, and learn new things.
So yes, things will change, as they should. But I’ll be okay and so will you! Change can be good for all of us. But there will be one thing that is constant – for sure. And that, of course, is LOVE!
Jane

UUCG’s Adult Forum is designed to encourage discussion by sharing our stories and wisdom so we may “learn more about being human.” We meet on the first Sunday of the month to reinforce the “warmth of community” that calls us to attend church. Think of us as an adult Sunday School class, and join in!

Keep Judith Longfield in your thoughts as she recovers from her foot surgery. She welcomes texts and looks forward to having full mobility again!
Our hearts go out to June Sherwood and Kent Goering. June's sister, Nell died peacefully with her husband and daughter at her side after living with the fog of Alzheimer's disease for 11 years.
In February, we will be doing a training on "pastoral care" for people at UUCG who would like to make a few calls and support members in need on behalf of the congregation. We are so fortunate to have 6 volunteers for the training.

Our membership team is planning on a new member joining ceremony on February 15 during the service. Let Beth Stevenson (404-824-5562) or Rev. Jane know if you are interested in becoming a member of UUCG.
We are in need of volunteers to be greeters or to help with after service hospitality (coffee, tea and treats). Let Beth Stevenson (404-824-5562) know if you are interested in helping out.

A Marriage at Sea: A True Story of Love, Obsession, and Shipwreck by Sophie Elmhirst
“This is nonfiction that reads like fiction – the best kind. Elmhirst’s retelling is a triumph, second only to the seemingly impossible feat of Maurice and Maralyn themselves. You won’t be able to put it down.”
