June 1

"Singing for Our Lives"

Beth Stevenson

Join us on June 1 for an intergenerational music service that enriches our souls as we sing together songs of protest, justice and "good trouble". We are planning a service to fill our hearts with the possibilities of how music can be an element in helping us cope with injustice and concerns for our democracy. Absolutely no music skills and talent required -- as a minister once said years ago, "if you can't sing .... then, sing loud". We will have several of our congregational musicians accompanying us as we join our voices together to rock the house, fill our hearts with hope and gather strength for the efforts ahead of us.

"Something to Talk About"

Clint Tawes

In a world where compassion is called radical and justice is labeled controversial, we’re going to be talked about no matter what—so why not make it count? This sermon invites us to love boldly, live our values out loud, or give the world something worth talking about.

June 15

"When you assume..."

Randy Blasch

So often we make decisions based on assumption and stereotypes. Can we recognize that within ourselves and what can we do about it?

June 22

"Slave Ships"

John Cowlishaw

We begin with an overview of the transatlantic slave trade, from its origin in the Algarve of Portugal in 1444 to the last American slave ship, the Clotilde, in 1860, with emphasis on the ships that carried them. The story of one of Clotilde’s captives, Cudjo Lewis, will be told from his capture by a female army in Benin, Africa, to his confinement in the King of Dahomey’s barracoon thru the Middle Passage, to his arrival in Mobile, Alabama. Over 12 million Africans were slave-shipped to the Americas. But not all ships made it, and the last ten years have featured the discovery and exploration of those slave ships that were wrecked.

June 29

"The Intersection of Coin Collecting and Spirituality"

Greg Brock

Greg will present some of the more unusual coins/paper currency from his collection along with the almost spiritual experience of finding and collecting them. Attendees invited to BYOC to discuss over coffee afterwards as well.

WE ARE STREAMING

If you would like to join us live via Zoom, go to this link on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.: uuma.zoom.us/j/479-325-3254

This link is also used by the Sisterhood 3 group for their meetings.

Summer appears and Jane disappears – or so it seems. Yes, summer is when I usually take vacation time as well as study time and professional leave.

Greg and I will leave on May 26 for three weeks in Scotland. Maybe Greg will come back wearing the traditional kilt. We’ll see. After a brief time to be with our great grandchildren who will have moved back to Georgia in our absence, we will head to Baltimore to represent you at our General Assembly.

Then on July 22-27, I’m planning to attend the Conference for the Association for UU Music Ministries. I’ve always wanted to attend this conference and THIS year – it’s in Atlanta, so that makes attending more affordable. So, I may not be here – but I’ll be preparing for another wonderful year with you, beginning with our In-gathering which will be on Sunday, August 3 (a week earlier than we have been having it in the past).

We have some great programs planned for the summer. Come and support these folks as they share good messages with you.

A letter from President

Highlights from the May 2025 meeting

The Board of Trustees met on May 18, 2025.  On the agenda:  presentation of Financial Reports, including an update about new Synovus Bank cd’s to improve our interest rates on money held in reserve; an update from Children’s RE Program with discussion of upcoming summer plans and volunteer training on May 25; update on Social Justice initiatives including food collection (we presently  have ample supplies)  and Manna House volunteering (great response, with next date set for May 28, and volunteer lunch set for May 31).

We have a newly installed baby changing table in the front children’s room thanks to great installation by Brian and Randy, as well as new shelving in the kitchen, thanks to Randy, which frees up kitchen counter space.

Over the summer, Board members will be reviewing materials for drafting a Covenant of Right Relations. The goal is to have a preliminary outline to share with the congregation in the fall. With input, we will finalize a Covenant that can be adopted at our annual congregational meeting.

Brian reported on his attendance at a meeting of the newly formed Glyn-Brunswick Disaster Faith Network. With the absence of Red Cross and FEMA representatives in our area, this organization aims to unite faith communities with local agencies to work on mitigation and recovery from disasters which may occur.  We completed a questionnaire which evaluated our response capabilities. Contact Brian if you wish to participate in this essential planning.

Looking for an opportunity to lend your time and talents to our initiatives? Contact any Board member and let them know – we encourage and welcome your participation. What part of the work of the world is yours?

Wishing all of you Happy Summer Days!

Sunday, June 1, 2025 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. in UUCG Bill Phillips Forum Room

Discussion leader: Myron Waldman

Topic: Travel Tips & Tricks

Myron will lead a discussion on planning and executing travel workarounds for saving time, energy, and aggravation.

Myron provided this as background - "It used to be so easy to change flights by just smudging the handwritten ticket entries and then boarding the flight of your choice, but things have changed, and so has the game of travel. I spent decades traveling the world promoting interest in my company’s innovative products to manufacturers, presenting technical papers, and finding sales agents. Today, I travel for pleasure, honoring the new rules and what the rules don’t say about travel. I will share some knowledge gained from the trip Marie and I recently completed."

UUCG's Adult Forum is designed to encourage discussion by sharing our stories and wisdom so we may “learn more about being human.”

We meet to reinforce the “warmth or community” that calls us to attend church.

Meetings are on the FIRST SUNDAY of the month from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m.
