Growing up in my tribal community, I often heard the phrase “The devil is a lie,” a saying also familiar in the Black church tradition. In this sermon, we’ll explore the wisdom hidden in that expression and what it can teach us about truth, freedom, and the stories we tell about ourselves, our communities, and our nation.

"Exploring Religious Naturalism with Ursula Goodenough"

Carolyn will discuss three themes from Ursula Goodenough's book, Sacred Depths of Nature. Goodenough, a self-identified Religious Naturalist, believes humans are bound to nature through biological and physical coexistence and evolution. She asserts that, since nature can evoke religious emotions, such as reverence, awe, and joy, it is sacred.

"The Bitter & The Sweet/Stories of Immigrant Women"

"The Bitter & The Sweet: Stories of Immigrant Women, Their Food Traditions and Making Do” is an original adaptation by Ruth Trudeau of a book by Jane Ziegelman. We’ll hear stories from immigrants, all women, from Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Jews from Eastern Europe. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, they came to America for work and for food. In their struggles they assimilated American foods and also shared with us their food traditions. They learned to make do with what they had.

Rev. Jane's Retirement
June was our final month with Rev. Jane as our minister. During our May 31 service, we celebrated Rev. Jane with music, readings, tributes, and a potluck lunch. It was a joyful and meaningful occasion, made even more special by the unveiling of the Rev. Dr. Jane Page Social Justice Fund.
We send our best wishes to Rev. Jane as she begins this new chapter and looks forward to new adventures!
Generosity in Action
Rev. Jane has contributed to UUCG in so many ways, often behind the scenes. We would like to acknowledge her generous contribution that, until now, has remained anonymous. From 2022 through 2025, Rev. Jane made monthly gifts beyond her pledge to support UUCG, helping with the mortgage payoff, building upkeep, and other important needs. These gifts totaled $40,000 and helped close significant financial gaps.
Rev. Jane’s generosity throughout her tenure at UUCG has helped leave the congregation on stronger financial footing, including a reserve fund of more than $50,000. Her gifts also helped reduce our debt to a level that inspired Terry and Phyllis Frey to pay off the remaining mortgage.
Rev. Jane has shared that these gifts are an expression of her love for UUCG, and she hopes they may inspire others to support the congregation in ways that are meaningful to them. Please join us in offering Rev. Jane our deep gratitude for these gifts.

Covenant Between Rev. Jane and UUCG
Unitarian Universalism takes the retirement of a minister seriously because of the emotional bonds between the minister and congregation. The UU Association recommend the use of covenants to manage the new relationship between the retiring minister, the congregation, and the new minister when one arrives. For this interim period before a new minister, the Board of Trustees is establishing a written covenant (called a Letter of Understanding) between Rev. Jane and the congregation. This will help to set boundaries in a way that allows us all to move forward productively. We’ll present this to the congregation at an upcoming service and ask that everyone do their best to honor it.
Minister Search
The Ministerial Search Committee led by Judith Longfield continues work on the online congregational profile which will be used by ministerial candidates to learn about us. We are working with Bill Lewis of Woodstork Productions to bring the site online. When the online portal is ready, the UUA MinistrySearch system will be activated.

Adult Forum is on vacation!
We’re taking a break this summer to plan for the fall.
Our next meeting will be Sunday, September 6 at 9:00 AM
in the UUCG Bill Phillips Forum Room.
UUCG’s Adult Forum is designed to encourage discussion by sharing our stories and wisdom so we may “learn more about being human.” We meet on the first Sunday of the month to reinforce the “warmth of community” that calls us to attend church. Think of us as an adult Sunday School class, and join in!

Summer time can be a bit slower at UUCG as people travel and we can miss seeing each other. Reach out to people you have not seen in a while -- maybe invite someone to join you for lunch after the service. Or consider inviting someone to lunch. We are all part of the UUCG Caring Team.

We need more Greeters!
This is the best start to volunteering -- you just need a smile and to extend a warm welcome on Sunday mornings. We are in need of volunteers to be greeters or to help with after service hospitality (coffee, tea and treats). These are both great ways to get to know UUCG and meet members and visitors.

The families and members of NAMI Glynn County are here to help! We offer understanding to anyone concerned about mental illnesses and the treatment of mental illness. Mental illnesses are brain disorders that are biologically based medical problems. Untreated, they can cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling, and relating. This results in substantially diminished capacity for dealing with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness can affect persons of any age and occur in any family. They are not caused by bad parenting and no evidence of weakness of character.
