"Community: It's Source, Strength and Hope"

Rev. Charlie Tyler, Guest Minister

Meaningful community seems so very hard to find. Yet it's always at our fingertips.

Charlie Tyler is a native of Clearwater, Florida. He calls several cities home including Greensboro, NC and Cincinnati, OH among others. He is a 1976 graduate of University of South Carolina and a graduate of Reformed Theological Seminary. He pastored two rural Presbyterian churches before undergoing a radical reshaping of his spiritual understanding. He has been a part of UU of the Lowcountry since 2016. He also serves s as a full- time hospice chaplain in Bluffton/Hilton Head area. He has two daughters and six grandchildren.

After the service we will be hosting a lunch at UUCG.

IF YOU DO PLAN TO ATTEND, PLEASE CLICK HERE

"When It Rains, It Pours: A UU Theology for the Storm"

Clint Tawes

"With my father facing cancer and my mother living with advanced Alzheimer’s, I’ve found myself asking a deeply personal question: what does our UU faith give us when life becomes overwhelming? This sermon explores the spiritual resources that can help us feel held, grounded, and less alone in the storm."

"Exploring and Sharing Transformative Experiences"

Kim Merck

Kim Merck will lead a workshop style service to explore and share experiences that have changed us. During the pandemic, Kay Golan presented an online UUCG service called ""Experiencing the Holy"" that is the inspiration for this service."

"Exploring UU Values: Generosity"

Beth Sutton

Each month during this church year, we will explore one of our values. As we move into the season of generosity, we will consider this value.

Ministerial Search Committee - New Search Website is Live!

The new minister candidate welcome website is now live. This website has a congregational packet that ministers can use to learn about our congregation, history, and community. This is a major milestone for the Ministerial Search Committee. Thanks to Judith Longfield and everyone on the committee for their efforts! The committee will be notified by UUA when a minister expresses interest in UUCG and will do the initial evaluation of all applications.

Please note: This is a confidential process, and the names of applicants will not be released outside of the search committee.

The new search website link is: https://uuofcoastalga.org/?ucp-access=734b0713

UUCG Ministry Search Congregational Profile Portal is Live!

The UUCG congregational record for the UUA ministerial search portal was submitted to the Congregational Transitions team on August 17. The Southern Region reviewed the record and suggested some changes. A revised version incorporating some of the recommendations was submitted on August 24 and was approved. UUA then officially activated the UUCG search portal. The portal links to the UUA Jobs Board, where congregations looking for a new minister are listed, and provides an in-depth profile of UUCG, our congregation, and what we value and are looking for in a new minister. Ministers looking at the jobs board can access the portal for congregations that interest them. So, our search process is now live!

It has been a long road to this point. Thank you to everyone who has participated in this process with your input, suggestions, and support!

Summer is over and we're back!

Join us for our meeting on Sunday, September 6 at 9:00 AM
in the UUCG Bill Phillips Forum Room.

Topic:  What’s on your Mind?

Join us curious and engaged UUs for a general discussion before the service. This is an opportunity to share what’s on your mind and in your heart. You’re invited to share an article, a poem, song lyrics, a book review, or talk about something interesting that you observed.

UUCG’s Adult Forum is designed to encourage discussion by sharing our stories and wisdom so we may “learn more about being human.” We meet on the first Sunday of the month to reinforce the “warmth of community” that calls us to attend church. Think of us as an adult Sunday School class, and join in!

Our Caring Team does pastoral care for the congregation -- meaning we help be the "listening ears and the caring hearts" while we seek a minister. The name of the person on call is listed in the Thursday email each week and one of our members graciously gave their number to be posted at UUCG and in the newsletter, so there is always a number to call.

Do you or someone you know need to be mentioned in the Caring Circle or need a call from a trained Caring Team member?

No information is shared without permission.

Our on-call Caring Team Member for the week of September 3 is Kent Goering (703-346-0898)

Mark Your Calendar for LUNCH at UUCG on September 6!

On September 6th we will host guest minister, Reverend Charlie Tyler, from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Lowcountry in Bluffton, SC. We look forward to meeting him and his wife. UUCG will host a luncheon after the service.

See you in the sanctuary!

Then, let me know how many people will be in your party.

Have you been thinking about joining UUCG? Many of our members are also members in another UU congregation. We would love to have you join us.

Text Beth Stevenson at 404-824-5562 to learn more about becoming a member.

We need more Greeters!

This is the best start to volunteering -- you just need a smile and to extend a warm welcome on Sunday mornings. We are in need of volunteers to be greeters or to help with after service hospitality (coffee, tea and treats). These are both great ways to get to know UUCG and meet members and visitors.

Let Beth Stevenson know if you are interested in helping as a Greeter. Call or text Beth at 404-824-5562.

Our Sunday School has been focusing on more fun activities for the summer since attendance varies with vacations and whatnot. We have played games that are good ways to practice problem-solving and cooperation, learned about voting rights, Pride celebrations, done a couple of art lessons, made paper airplanes and flew them outside, and talked about America's 250th celebration. And notably- celebrated two birthdays in June!

Since our teaching assistant, Eden Frazier, is a student at Coastal College, she has been back home for the summer, so I have been relying more on my volunteers to help out. Thank you to Carolyn Wallace, Beth Sutton, Beth Stevenson, Greg Brock, Corinne Bachman, and Sarabeth Sutton.

We have a list with a few names of people who have had security clearance. If you would like to be able to help out with our kids, you need to get this clearance (it's quick and painless). Please contact Lisa Kent for more information, at rlbkent@bellsouth.net, or 912-222-2889.

We are required by UUA and our board to have two adults in the room with the class to meet insurance requirements.

So-I'm glad to report- that Eden is planning to join us again this year! She has been missing seeing our children and will be coming back after school gets going in August.

If you have general questions about our Children's Sunday School please contact Lisa.

NAMI Glynn County is proud to be part of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, supporting individuals and families affected by mental health challenges. If you have a loved one living with mental illness, we invite you to join our Family Support Group—an encouraging space to share, learn, and connect.

The families and members of NAMI Glynn County are here to help! We offer understanding to anyone concerned about mental illnesses and the treatment of mental illness. Mental illnesses are brain disorders that are biologically based medical problems. Untreated, they can cause severe disturbances in thinking, feeling, and relating. This results in substantially diminished capacity for dealing with the ordinary demands of life. Mental illness can affect persons of any age and occur in any family. They are not caused by bad parenting and no evidence of weakness of character.

SEPTEMBER BOOK

What to Make of a Life: Cliffs, Fog, Fire and the Self-Knowledge Imperative

by Jim Collins

It is a question we all wrestle with more than once: How do we find our way in the world? How do we make it past the cliffs, significant events that can radically change a life? How do we keep the inner fire burning bright, long and late? Inspired by relentless curiosity, Jim Collins devoted a decade to studying these questions and to minutely analyzing those moments when life flips from clarity to confusion and casts us into a befuddling fog. We have many wonderful people who volunteer their talents to UUCG. There are numerous people who help make our surroundings comfortable (and working properly), provide programs of interest and refreshments that we enjoy.

In our sanctuary, we have a hearing loop to enhance listening.

It's available to people with hearing instruments equipped with a T-coil setting

and to persons with their own hearing loop receiver devices.

We are located at 1710 Gloucester Street - Brunswick, Georgia
