In the Spirit
My first serious church volunteer position was teaching RE (religious education) at a large congregation in Rochester, New York. I had been on welcoming committees, sung in choirs and worked on pledge drives, but this was a year-long commitment to be part of a rotating team teaching the third and fourth graders. I was a schoolteacher and had classroom experience, but I had always been in charge of my own lesson plans and class management. Now I was sharing the planning and teaching with other people, and we took very seriously the responsibility to lead a really good Sunday session. I think perhaps we took it too seriously, focusing on content and not realizing that it was simply our presence as caring and interested adults who were neither parents, family or teachers that really mattered. Like everything else in the church, it was ultimately about the relationships, the showing up, and because this was RE, the snacks.
I observe from my years with you that this congregation loves its children and wants to be in fellowship with them. One of the best ways to connect across generations is to teach religious education, and I would like to ask all of you to seriously consider applying to be part of our teaching team this fall. If we get enough folks, we can be creative with scheduling.
I will be working remotely August 5-18, spending time with friends and family who have summer time off. I will be answering emails, available to call and Zoom and planning for fall. If you need me in an emergency, I am not traveling far and can return for you. Stay well, let’s hope some real rain comes through soon!
In faith, hope and love,
Rev. Vicki
