Summer Sunday Series

"Interconnected"

Rev. Dr. Victoria Weinstein, Worship Leader

Drawing from sources from contemporary thinkers to medieval mystics, this informal spiritual gathering invites contemplation of the interrelatedness of such things as smoky skies, contaminated lettuce, congressional condolences, poetry, theology and tall ships.

A Message from Rev. Vicki

In the Spirit

My first serious church volunteer position was teaching RE (religious education) at a large congregation in Rochester, New York. I had been on welcoming committees, sung in choirs and worked on pledge drives, but this was a year-long commitment to be part of a rotating team teaching the third and fourth graders. I was a schoolteacher and had classroom experience, but I had always been in charge of my own lesson plans and class management. Now I was sharing the planning and teaching with other people, and we took very seriously the responsibility to lead a really good Sunday session. I think perhaps we took it too seriously, focusing on content and not realizing that it was simply our presence as caring and interested adults who were neither parents, family or teachers that really mattered. Like everything else in the church, it was ultimately about the relationships, the showing up, and because this was RE, the snacks.

I observe from my years with you that this congregation loves its children and wants to be in fellowship with them. One of the best ways to connect across generations is to teach religious education, and I would like to ask all of you to seriously consider applying to be part of our teaching team this fall. If we get enough folks, we can be creative with scheduling.

I will be working remotely August 5-18, spending time with friends and family who have summer time off. I will be answering emails, available to call and Zoom and planning for fall. If you need me in an emergency, I am not traveling far and can return for you. Stay well, let’s hope some real rain comes through soon!

In faith, hope and love,

Rev. Vicki

Call for Art

The History Ministry Team is calling all UUCGL artists to participate in our upcoming exhibit, "Lydia Breed and Friends." The exhibit will run from approximately late September to late October. It will feature original prints (including but not limited to silk screens, woodblock prints, linocuts, monotypes and lithographs) and three-dimensional works (including sculpture, ceramics, assemblage, and any other 3-D work that can be securely placed on the floor or a table or safely and easily hung).

We are looking for works relating to one of four different themes: trees and forests, the sea and ships, the inner flame or light, and social justice. Works will be displayed in thematic groups relating to one or more of Lydia's prints or three-dimensional works.

If you have an appropriate piece of art or would be willing to loan a piece of Lydia's art, please complete THIS FORM by August 16th. More details will follow soon!

Weekly Update Summer Schedule

For the summer season the Update will be mailed every other week instead of weekly. Look for the next edition on August 12th.
