Some of you will know that Mother's Day has Unitarian roots. Julia Ward Howe — best known for writing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" — was transformed by her work tending the wounded of the Civil War. In 1870, she called for an international Mother's Day of peace, writing: "Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy, and patience." She imagined the day as a day when mothers across nations would refuse to let their children be trained for war. "I have been a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn for as long as I can remember, and it has shaped the way that I view the world, giving me a deep-seated desire to use the privilege of a college education to help others. I will be studying Chemical Engineering with a focus in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell starting this fall. Cities like Lynn need to adopt innovative energy solutions in order to become affordable for ordinary people again. My goal is to help remove the hold that fossil fuels have on the country and, in the process, lead American society—and more specifically, cities like ours—to a more equitable and sustainable future."

The Church History Ministry Team extends thanks to everyone who voted—both online and at Coffee Hour—to help choose which Lydia Breed print should be framed for the church. Ruth’s Garden received 8 votes, Inner Fire received 9, and Sailing Ships emerged as the clear favorite with 17 votes. We'll be seeing this beautiful artwork professionally framed and hanging in the church in the future!
