"The Mighty Stream"

Rev. Dr. Victoria Weinstein, Worship Leader

Life is change, all is flux, and the mighty stream rolls on and on. In conversation with the prophet Amos (“let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream”) and our choral anthem, I will be reflecting on professor Diana Eck’s claim that “all religions are a stream of argument.”

A Message from Rev. Vicki

In the Spirit

Usually when we think of “pastoral care,” we tend to think of visits to the sick, end-of-life care, and counseling to folks in crisis who want the counsel and support of their clergy person. What happens when the entire community and even the country are in crisis? We have precedent for this: shootings, bombings, and of course the shared experience of the pandemic. In these times, pastoral care looks a bit different, with more requests coming to your ministers seeking help with learning new skills, connecting with resources, and coping with unusual feelings of rage, stress, helplessness and existential despair. Pastoral care also looks like responding to people who want with new urgency to be useful and productive; who have new ideas for how the church might be part of that. It looks like requests for reading or watching news or opinions pieces together to get a clergy opinion or emotional support. It is more text messages saying sarcastic or funny things and sharing memes. It is deep and constant, meaningful and demanding.

What worries me sometimes is that those of you who are experiencing “regular” life stress or suffering unconnected to the national crisis may feel that I am not available to you to talk or meet about your concerns. I am! We are all doing our best to respond to the myriad demands of any given moment, and you should not hesitate to let me know if you need spiritual support for your own personal life. Send up a flare.

And if you are doing well and feeling well-resourced emotionally, holler and let me know if, for instance, you’re available to contribute to Sunday morning support. We really want to add another person or two to our livestream team — and we hear that our services mean A LOT to folks watching — and hospitality, decor, or leadership teams. Everyone takes turns rowing according to their strength.

Thank you for reading. Check in on each other. Take care of your dear selves.

In faith, hope and love,

Rev. Vicki

A Message from Rev. Chris

The Youth Group is organizing a clothing drive through April 6 to benefit people experiencing homelessness in Boston. The “highest demand” items requested are XL and bigger, seasonal men’s and unisex new or used clothing items, as well as new white socks and underwear for men and women in all sizes, including bras. See below in the Update for a more comprehensive list, and please drop the items off in the foyer where you will find two large bins marked “CityReach Clothing Donations”. The items will be delivered and distributed as part of the Youth Group’s overnight service-learning program with Cityreach in Boston, April 11-12. The group will learn first hand about homelessness from people who have experienced it and join the Cityreach staff in street ministry and offer hospitality, food and clothing, followed by times of sharing and reflection.

Due to the popularity of their last homemade soups, the Youth Group froze another round of chicken noodle and vegan minestrone soup. These are available in individual take-home tupperware containers in the kitchen freezer for anyone that might appreciate a home-cooked soup! Please try to wash and return the tupperware back to the kitchen, if you can, so that we can more easily continue this offering. We could also use a donation of plastic shopping bags to be stored in the kitchen to help carry the soup away... READ MORE

Sound Healing is back!

Sunday, May 4th | 1:30-4pm | Sanctuary

This was a very popular offering last month so we brought it back to UUCGL. Feel free to invite friends!

Sound Healing, also known as Vibrational Healing, is a form of non-invasive alternative healing similar to yoga and acupuncture. Endorsed by such disparate figures as the Buddha, Einstein, and Medical Oncologist Mitchell Gaynor M.D., Sound Healing is a deeply effective way to release stress from the body/mind, thus restoring the immune system.

Join us for this 90-minute voyage into the bliss, wellness, and healing that can come from profound relaxation via deeply therapeutic sound and tone. The session will be facilitated by sound therapist Joe Hayes. The fee for this event is $25, with a sliding scale. Pay online or with cash or check made out to UUCGL at the door, but do register either way to save your spot.

Plan to sit in one of the chairs, or bring a yoga mat and blanket and stretch out on the floor of the sanctuary. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a blanket/pillow if you'd like for your own comfort and warmth. Recommended for all ages 12 and older.

"This was truly one of the most amazing experiences of my recent life. If you get the chance to attend Joe's sound healing event, RUN, don't walk!"

–Ana Forrest, international yoga celebrity and author; founder of Forrest Yoga.

Annual Ferry Beach All-Church All-Ages Retreat Weekend

April 25-27 | Ferry Beach, Saco, ME

All are welcome! Unwind, find inspiration, and strengthen the bonds of community together at Ferry Beach this spring, with healthy & delicious food, and good coffee! There's something for everyone, including a sand volleyball court, two playgrounds, a fire pit, an outdoor chapel, and of course, the beach!

New this year is an opportunity to purchase dinner as an “add on” from their Dining Hall on Friday night from 6-7pm. If you are looking to reserve a private cottage for the weekend, you are encouraged to register ASAP as those spaces are limited. Most of our group will use the Rowland Dorm Building, which is more economical. Camperships are again available this year as we do not want money to be an obstacle to participating. Please reach out to Rev. Chris if that is something that would be helpful to you or if you have any questions.
