Statement from Grand Traverse Area Clergy
on Recent Acts of Violence
October 30, 2018
We join together as an interfaith community of leaders to share in the profound grief provoked by the attack on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh that took the lives of eleven Jews gathered for Sabbath worship and wounded several others, including first responders.
Together, we cry out with the voice of the prophet Jeremiah: "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted, because they were not." (31:14) And, we take comfort in the prophet's words of reassurance: "The Lord has appeared to me, far away, saying, 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have remained true to you.'" (31:2)
Together, we are also profoundly affected by the recent spate of bomb material sent to leaders across the United States and we mourn the lives of Maurice Stallard and Vickie Jones, murdered in Kentucky by a white supremacist.
Together, we grieve all instances of daily violence and discrimination faced by members of the wider American community.
Together, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and wider communities of the departed and offer prayers for quick and complete healing for the wounded.
Together, we exhort ourselves and all who share a vision of a peaceful, diverse, just, and compassionate American society, to redouble our efforts at reconciliation and recommit ourselves to upholding our country's highest ideals and aspirations.

"After the Election
All Congregation Service - Donna-Stein Harris,
What happens if the outcome of this mid-term election, or any election, isn't what we had hoped for? Join us as we explore UUCGT's strong commitment to social justice as a path forward whether we win or lose.
Nursery care is available for infants - age 4; all other
children and youth,
please remain in the service with their family.
Time change happens Sunday morning - Fall back!
Children & Youth Programs
Children and families are an important element within UUCGT. Currently, we are in the process of restructuring our Children & Youth Programs for Sunday mornings. Our intention and goals are to build
an excellent future with kids and youth in mind with
new and exciting programs, as well as having a new teacher/coordinator in place by the first of the year.
In the interim, child care is provided only for infants through age 4 in our Nursery.
All other children and youth are invited to remain in the service with their families.
Your input is welcome and encouraged!
Please contact Jolynn Paige, Child and Youth Program Task Force Coordinator at
with your thoughts or suggestions.
~ A Note of Gratitude from the Hoffmann Family ~
On behalf of the entire, extended Hoffmann family I would like to offer our thanks to the UU Congregation in helping to make Pinkie's Memorial Service on Saturday, October 27 a memorable tribute.
Extra thanks to those congregants who helped in the planning and participation. Our family was very happy with everything that unfolded at the Service. The reception afterwards was wonderful with plenty of food, desserts (rum-balls!!), drinks, and camaraderie.
Special acknowledgements to the Memorial Reception / Hospitality committees for their hard work in organizing the reception. The interment of Pinkie's ashes to the memorial garden on Sunday was done with grace and dignity with special thanks to my dear friend, Sarah Montgomery-Richards.
The weekend provided us with a warm, supportive celebration of Pinkie's life. We appreciated your presence.
