Reflection...

"Poetry is truth in its Sunday clothes."
~ Joseph Roux

Friends -

This Sunday, we continue our series of Sunday Services exploring Transcendentalism - this week through the voices of its poets:
Goethe, Wordsworth, Whitman and Coleridge.   Together, with beloved hymns that call us to contemplate transcendentalist themes of nature, meaning and change, we will honor Memorial Day with a "Call from Beyond" and from within.

Please join us - come a few moments early and enjoy a quiet meditation from Br. David Steindl-Rast at 10:15 AM.

In blessing -

Rabbi Chava

P.S.  A reminder that on Sunday, June 24, our service will be live-streaming from the UUA General Assembly and will begin at 10:00 AM.   Join us!

Sunday Service
Sunday, May 27   -  Rabbi Chava Bahle
10:30 AM:  "The Transcendentalists Poets "

In addition to the richness of the intellect, the beauty of nature and the passion for social justice, the Transcendentalist Movement was also celebrated in the poetry of Goethe, Coleridge, Whitman and Wordsworth.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we will go deep into the rich imagery of these poets who captured the heart of the Transcendentalist stance.
We are delighted to welcome Max Old Bear to share a selection from Walt Whitman.

P.S.  Please join us in a Community May Pole Celebration immediately following the s ervice.   Let us honor Spring's blessings together!

Suggested reading for families/parents this month

This month, I am suggesting a lovely read-aloud book for families as a follow-up to Harry Potter.  This book is filled with " magic, adventure, friendship, and even a dragon who can't fly!"

"Where the Mountain Meets the Moon"
by Grace Lin
*A Newbery Honor Book*

"In the Valley of Fruitless Mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family's fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.
Grace Lin, author of the beloved  Year of the Dog and  Year of the Rat, returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship.  A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore,  Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz.  Her beautiful illustrations, printed in full-color, accompany the text throughout.  Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young readers."
