“The Path of Love” Soul Matters Theme Reflections

with Rev. Lissa Gundlach

Come explore the many paths of love for self and others with Small Group Ministry Facilitator Laura Scully, Naomi Yoshida, and Rev. Lissa. This Sunday features guest musician Tracy LJ Robertson joining Director of Music Ministries Francisco Ruiz for inspiration and uplift. (Guest Musician Bio at right.)

Join us for a Small Group Drop in after service: If you have been curious about this popular sharing circle and deep listening program, now is your chance to try it out, in person, one Sunday this fall. We are offering three 45-minute intro sessions after Service on February 5, March 5, and April 2. On those Sundays, Reverend Lissa will reveal 2 questions on a topic (during Service) which will be the focus of the sharing circle following Service. On February 5, please join us in Room 5 after Sunday Service.

Tracy LJ Robertson is an educator, session vocalist, vocal percussionist, vocal arranger, and improvisor. While studying at Berklee College of Music he performed in ensembles of global influence, from Balkan to contemporary Indian, to Latin, to western classical and jazz. He's worked with a range of artists including Bobby McFerrin, Valarie Simpson, Justin Timberlake, Sabrina Carpenter, Andy Grammer, Michael Bublé and Billie Eilish. The acappella community has offered opportunities to tour with groups like Pitch Slapped, Overboard, Vocalosity, The House Jacks, and m-pact. Tracy is grateful to be working and facilitating for the Urban Voices Project and in spaces where music is explicitly supporting/instigating healing and empowerment. Tracy enjoys spreading his passion for life through music and ever deepening appreciation of mother nature.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 16) through Valentine's Day (February 14). As we Side with Love this Black History month, we consider the intersectional path of liberation that requires dismantling of systems of power.

Sunday Service with Pastor Cedric Nelms, Guest Preacher

Cedric Nelms was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. Cedric has been in the ministry for 20+ years, working in different areas of ministry; from youth ministry, men's ministry, teaching, and leadership principles to community development, social justice, and civic engagement. He is the Senior Pastor of Chosen Generation Fellowship Church, in Long Beach, CA. Cedric taught workshops on relational leadership, trauma healing, ministry enterprise, youth engagement, and the five principles of life. He was radio host of the "Chosen Generation Ministry Radio Show", an internet program/podcast that deals with the intersection of culture, life, and faith. He is also the author of Get Me Through...The Makeover of My Life. Cedric and his wife started Community Bridge Connectors Resource Center, which focuses on health and wellness, education, career development, and basic needs. They also started Legacy Bridge Community Development Corporation which focuses on real estate projects and land acquisition. In addition to that, Cedric works in the area of community organizing and advocacy, where he is actively working on being a bridge builder between Los Angeles county communities and the Faith Based community.

Cedric and Karen have been married for 20+ years. They have 5 beautiful children, Erika, Jonathan, and a set of triplets, Isaiah, Khalid, and Courtney. He loves to spend time with his family, reading, watching sports, traveling, hanging out with his family, writing, and just having a good time!

Beyond Principles & Purposes: Expanding our Covenant with Article 2 with Rev. Lissa Gundlach

Article II of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Bylaws, Principles and Purposes, is the foundation for all of the work of our UUA and its member congregations and covenanted communities. It is the covenant to which all of our congregations and covenanted communities pledge themselves when they become members of our UUA. The Article II Study Commission has completed its two year study. Come explore how this discussion has challenged our foundations and leads us forward into new territory.

UUCLB's Governing Board changed from 7 trustees to 5 from last year. How are the various governance areas of the church now represented on the board? We now have a "Governance Task Force". Small Group Ministry Onsite: Try Out Small Group Ministry on an Upcoming Sunday! Love…Vulnerability…Resistance

If you have been curious about this popular sharing circle and deep listening program, now is your chance to try it out, in person, one Sunday this fall. On February 5, join us at 11:30 a.m. in Room 5. The March 5 and April 2 sessions will meet in Wylder Hall. Explore the concepts of Love (Feb.), Vulnerability (Mar.), and Resistence (Apr.) with facilitators Laura Scully, Kevin Ford & Kate Taylor, and Chris Kempf & Gail Sakuda-Kempf, respectively. You may go to one or all three sessions. If you find the Small Group Ministry experience meaningful, you are encouraged to sign up for our Winter/Spring series of sessions starting in February. You can join an ongoing small group, meeting once/twice monthly, to discuss themes mentioned above (as well as the themes of Creativity and Finding Our Center).

Los Angeles Recorder Concert

On Sunday afternoon, February 5 at 3:00PM, Wylder Hall will once again be graced with a performance by the Los Angeles Recorder Orchestra (LARO). The group, which is in its twentieth year of music making, will play works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Charles Gounod, and contemporary composers Glen Shannon and Frans Geysen.

LARO is made up of thirty recorder players from all over southern California. They play recorders ranging from eight inch long "sopraninos", to the nine foot tall "sub contra bass". The group is led by musician/ educator Thomas Axworthy.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR GA ATTENDEES

8th Principle Scholarships Due Soon

Applications for UUCLB's financial aid to attend General Assembly in June (virtually or in-person) must be submitted by noon on Sunday, February 19. Any member of the congregation who is part of an identity group frequently sidelined and overlooked in our white-dominated society is eligible to apply. That includes people who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, socioeconomically marginalized, young/emerging adult, or youth (youth need not be church members).

Applications for this aid, 8th Principle Scholarships, are available three ways: electronically, on the church website (https://www.uuclb.org/act/); by hard copies, available in the church office; or as an email, from Kathy Adams (katole@uuclb.org).

GA '23 will take place in Pittsburgh, PA, from Wednesday, June 21, to Sunday, June 25, but it also happens online. Questions about scholarships? Email the Scholarship Team at 8pscholarships@uuclb.org.

The GA Housing Reservation System: It's now open. Book your room at one of the two hotels near the Convention Center that offer reduced rates too GA attendees. Visit the GA Housing Reservation System as soon as you can, to be sure you have your housing for GA.

-   Do not book directly with the GA hotels, because they cannot offer you the reduced rates. For all the information about housing you'll ever need, see https://www.uua.org/travel/general-asssembly-hotels.

-   Be aware of housing companies that contact you with special offers, but who may not even have connections with any hotels. Connections Housing is managing the UUA's housing blocks. The Virtual Poster Fair: It's accepting entries now. The Poster Fait has been a lively feature of GA for several years. (View last GA's Poster Fair selections.). You are warmly invited to submit a proposal for inclusion in the 2023 Virtual Poster Fair. (See https://www.uua.org/ga/program/contribute/proposing/poster-session-proposal.). Stories, initiatives, and examples of inspiring work in UUism will be featured, with selections based on the quality of proposals, embrace of diversity and inclusion, potential to provide attendees with concrete and usable tools, and the balance of multiple identity-based and theological perspectives.

Norma Stoltz Chinchilla Scholarship and Support

for the

CSULB Dream Resource Center

Two years ago, under the leadership of member Diane Kert, our church took a new approach to supporting undocumented immigrant students who are pursuing their degrees at our local campus just down the street, the California State University Long Beach.

Rather than continuing our own program begun over a decade ago by church member Cynthia Case, a high school teacher, and continued by the UUCLB Dream Scholarship Committee, we agreed to be part of a new scholarship established on the CSULB campus to honor our own Dr. Norma Chinchilla for her many years of activism on behalf of immigrant students . Last year, we decided to share the collection with the CSULB Dream Resource Center which has the capacity to help a large number of undocumented students with emergency financial aid and paid internship that help immigrant students to get valuable work experience prior to receiving their B.A. and M.A. degrees.

As a result of the generosity of our congregants last year,some of them choosing to honor the memory of Diane Kert with their donations, our donation to benefit immigrant students at CSULB was nearly $6,000. Now that the temporary legal status program known as DACA has been frozen due to court challenges from anti-immigrant forces and Congress has been unable to gather the votes for a path to citizenship for students for whom the U.S. has been their country since they were young, our help is needed more than ever.

We know that financial assistance to individual students does not address the need for structural reforms in our incoherent and unjust immigration policies but our direct assistance to students at CSULB stands is a part of our commitment to the larger campaign to recognize the valuable contributions of immigrant community members through combatting campaigns of hate and working tirelessly for immigrant reform. Our donations to the Dream Resource Center and the Norma Stoltz Chinchilla scholarship fund are our way of saying "We see you; we appreciate you; and we care about you" to undocumented students struggling to realize their dreams of a college education and entry into the workforce to help their families and contribute to our society.

You can support the monthly special collection by donating until the last Sunday of the month and marking your check with "Special Collection". Mail your check to: UUCLB, 5450 E.
