My Dia, Your Chalice: A Share Journey to Intersectional Justice

with Guest Tahil Sharma

(Social Justice Sunday is moved to the third Sunday this month to accommodate the DeBenneville Trip.)

As we celebrate Diwali, a days-long festival celebrated by a variety of different religions and cultures in South Asia, we welcome our beloved communities into our homes and sacred spaces to pray, rejoice, and brighten our lives. This is also a time to celebrate the achievement and renewal of justice as we choose courage in the midst of audacity and oppression. This talk will highlight stories and insights that call us to do more for the cause of mutually assured justice and abundance. We will also welcome in our newest members in a New Member Recognition Ceremony.

Tahil Sharma is an interfaith activist based in Southern California born to a Hindu father and a Sikh mother. He is the Regional Coordinator for North America at the United Religions Initiative, serving dozens of grassroots interfaith communities in their pursuit of peace, justice, and healing through program support and capacity building. Tahil also serves as an Interfaith Minister in Residence for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, a Board Member for Sadhana: A Coalition of Progressive Hindus, and a member of the Racial Justice & Religion Collective at the Aspen Institute’s Religion & Society Program.

GUEST AT YOUR TABLE: PURSUING LIBERATION

NOW is the time for Pursuing Liberation and you can be part of it by participating in our annual denomination-wide Guest At Your Table program. This intergenerational program raises support for and awareness about key human rights issues, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee for decades.

Participants receive information about four very special people working here or abroad to address injustice in its many forms. Then participants can gather around their kitchen or dining room table to discuss the efforts of each of the four guests. This provides Unitarian Universalists of all ages a chance to learn about what can be done to help others. A cardboard coin box is included for the middle of the table. This allows everyone to make a small contribution to the efforts of each “guest.” Since there are four highlighted “guests,” families have several opportunities to discuss and support each.

The four guests are:

Ana Lorena Delgadillo, who is supporting individuals and families impacted by human rights violations in Mexico and Central America.

Lidia Palma, who is advocating for the dignity of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries and an equitable legislative path to permanent residency for TPS holders.

Sepasitiano Patelisio, who is promoting Indigenous peoples’ right to self-determination and supports work in the Pacific to address climate-forced-displacement.

Dr. Margaret Amaka Ohia-Nowak, who is responding to the needs of Black, African, and Afro-descendant people fleeing Ukraine and staying long-term in Poland.

Since UUSC works in more than 20 countries, with over 50 grassroots partners, there are thousands of individuals that benefit from the work that our members make possible.

Guest At Your Table flyers and boxes are available after Service the last 2 Sundays in November (the 19 and 26) and the first 3 Sundays in December. We will collect the boxes on December 17. Congregants are encouraged to share the stories of Pursuing Liberation with friends and family visiting over the holidays. For more information, contact Laura Scully at 562-822-0200 or lbscully1@gmail.com.

Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, we hung on, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

This 7-session curriculum is for congregations and communities seeking to explore and deepen their commitments to faith-based reproductive dignity for all. Learn about each session of the curriculum and how you can lead your congregation through courageous conversations weaving together our faith and reproductive stories. This training is geared toward congregational leaders (clergy and laity) who help shape the educational formation within congregations. Once you have completed this training, you will be able to guide your congregation through the curriculum and SACReD Congregations designation process.

The SACReD Curriculum Training content is the same for each session, so you only need to attend one of the scheduled trainings:

A New Way of Life

Susan Burton established A New Way of Life Reentry Project ANWOL 25 years ago after serving six terms in prison. From its humble beginnings as a single reentry home in South Los Angeles, ANWOL has expanded to 12 safe homes and has helped more than 1,600 formerly incarcerated women find shelter and safety. More than 4,000 individuals have had pathways to employment cleared thorough their pro bono legal team. Hundreds of women and mothers have returned to their communities to become college graduates, small business owners, lawyers, and community leaders. And perhaps most exciting of all, 31 partner organizations in 18 states and 4 countries are replicating their acclaimed reentry model.

ANWOL doesn’t just provide safe housing and legal clinics. ANWOL also provides advocacy on behalf of formerly incarcerated people and leadership development for justice-involved women. They empower and build the leadership skills of formerly incarcerated people; they hire formerly incarcerated people; and they provide cuttingedge organizational leadership that promotes resources for disenfranchised people living in communities that have been marginalized.

For more information on ANWOL and Ms. Burton, see anewwayoflife.org. To see video testimonies of women ANWOL has helped, see http://testif-i.com.

You can support A New Way of Life Reentry Project up until the last Sunday of the month, by mail, text, or online. If by mail, note “Social Justice Collection” on your check, and send it to UUCLB, 5450 E. Atherton St., Long Beach, CA 90808. Using Text-to-Give, to give $25 for example, text the words “25 Special Collection” and the amount to 833-931-1845. To cover any convenience fees for the church, you can add the word “cover” (so “25 Special Collection $25 cover”) or simply text “Cover fees on” to cover fees on all text gifts. For online giving go to uuclb.org/give.
