Soul Matters Sunday: The Gift of Generosity
This year’s Soul Matters overarching frame is The Gifts of Our Faith. We focus on ten beloved UU values and explore their potential to shape us and, in turn, shape the world. This month, we look at the value of Generosity. What does it mean to cultivate material generosity, and generosity of spirit? Our children and youth begin in our service for Time for All Ages, followed by a Core Curriculum session.

My Dia, Your Chalice: A Share Journey to Intersectional Justice
with Guest Tahil Sharma
(Social Justice Sunday is moved to the third Sunday this month to accommodate the DeBenneville Trip.)
As we celebrate Diwali, a days-long festival celebrated by a variety of different religions and cultures in South Asia, we welcome our beloved communities into our homes and sacred spaces to pray, rejoice, and brighten our lives. This is also a time to celebrate the achievement and renewal of justice as we choose courage in the midst of audacity and oppression. This talk will highlight stories and insights that call us to do more for the cause of mutually assured justice and abundance. We will also welcome in our newest members in a New Member Recognition Ceremony..
Tahil Sharma is an interfaith activist based in Southern California born to a Hindu father and a Sikh mother. He is the Regional Coordinator for North America at the United Religions Initiative, serving dozens of grassroots interfaith communities in their pursuit of peace, justice, and healing through program support and capacity building. Statement of Purpose
Awaken people to their power in social justice activism and advocacy
LA Voice “Listening Campaign” & “Home is Sacred” Narrative has resulted in SB567 being Signed into Law in 2023 – Thank you for supporting this effort:
- Listening to our Congregants
- Postcards & Letters
- Rally at the Capital in Sacramento
- Meetings with our State Representatives & Senators, Long Beach Mayor
- News Conferences with the Press
When we started this journey together back in 2022, we knew the fight to get SB567, the Homelessness Prevention Act, through the legislative cycle and signed into law would be an uphill battle.
Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, we hung on, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

Transitioning. Look for some fundamental changes from the way the Pacific Western Region of the UUA is organized right now. The volunteer/staff Transition Team is working on writing bylaws, and the schedule for April's PWR Assembly includes time for a business meeting. UUA Reminders
The Disaster Fund needs your help. Please consider joining efforts to rescue UU congregations by donating to the Disaster Relief Fund. Information on donating is on the UUA website.
From the Church of the Larger Fellowship's Prison Ministry program. CLF has opened its annual campaign for donating to its Prison Ministry program. If you'd like to contribute, to help keep the program in operation, see Prison Ministry campaign. If you are moved by the thought of corresponding with an incarcerated UU, check out the program, at https://www.questformeaning.org/programs/prison-ministry/letter-writing-ministry/.
From the Unitarian Historical Society. "Uncovering the Hidden Power of Women in Unitarian and Universalist Histories," a free webinar that explores the impact of women on the UUA, will be presented on Thursday, November 09, 2023. Tyranny of the Minority ZOOM event
Sunday, November 5, 2023, 1:00pm
Zoom with authors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt
In-person at First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord, MA
And on Zoom - RSVP here: https://bit.ly/3rE5hnV
Register at: https://bit.ly/3rE5hnV
Questions: Patricia.Marr.29@gmail.com
We are at a crossroads: America will either become a multiracial democracy or cease to be a democracy at all, say Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt in their newest book, "Tyranny of the Minority." In the book, they offer a coherent framework for understanding these volatile times.
Join us for a presentation by the authors, with time for questions and answers and a book signing for those attending in-person.
Co-sponsored by Reclaim Our Democracy at First Parish in Concord and the Democracy Action Team at Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ).
UUSJ is also planning an event in January with David Pepper, author of Saving Democracy: A User’s Manual for Every American. This book lays out a clear strategy for saving democracy and lists all sorts of ways that people can get engaged in doing this good work. We wholeheartedly recommend this book.
We hope you and others you invite will join us on November 5.
TO: UUCLB Members & Friends
FROM: Unitarian Universalist for Social Justice - Fred Van Deusen and Patricia Marr
Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ) has supported the UU the Vote program in the past, and we are beginning our support for 2024 now. Our current work is focused on raising awareness of the crises American democracy is facing, and helping to increase our collective ability to motivate and mobilize in the months ahead.
To that end we are inviting you and members of your congregation to an event on Sunday, November 5, at 4pm EST, titled Tyranny of the Minority with Authors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt. A flyer for the event is available here. The authors are well known for their previous book How Democracies Die, and have met with President Biden, appeared on PBS, MSNBC, and many other networks and podcasts, and are now embarking on a book tour for their new book: Tyranny of the Minority: Why American Democracy Reached the Breaking Point.
We are very fortunate that they have agreed to join us at my church First Parish in Concord, MA for one of their few tour stops, and we will be making the event available on Zoom to all of you. We hope you will invite members of your congregation to attend. Here is a brief writeup.
Sincerely,
Fred Van Deusen

A New Way of Life
Susan Burton established A New Way of Life Reentry Project ANWOL 25 years ago after serving six terms in prison. From its humble beginnings as a single reentry home in South Los Angeles, ANWOL has expanded to 12 safe homes and has helped more than 1,600 formerly incarcerated women find shelter and safety. More than 4,000 individuals have had pathways to employment cleared thorough their pro bono legal team. Hundreds of women and mothers have returned to their communities to become college graduates, small business owners, lawyers, and community leaders. And perhaps most exciting of all, 31 partner organizations in 18 states and 4 countries are replicating their acclaimed reentry model.
ANWOL doesn’t just provide safe housing and legal clinics. ANWOL also provides advocacy on behalf of formerly incarcerated people and leadership development for justice-involved women. They empower and build the leadership skills of formerly incarcerated people; they hire formerly incarcerated people; and they provide cuttingedge organizational leadership that promotes resources for disenfranchised people living in communities that have been marginalized.
For more information on ANWOL and Ms. Burton, see anewwayoflife.org. To see video testimonies of women ANWOL has helped, see http://testif-i.com.
You can support A New Way of Life Reentry Project up until the last Sunday of the month, by mail, text, or online. If by mail, note “Social Justice Collection” on your check, and send it to UUCLB, 5450 E. Atherton St., Long Beach, CA 90808. Using Text-to-Give, to give $25 for example, text the words “25 Special Collection” and the amount to 833-931-1845. To cover any convenience fees for the church, you can add the word “cover” (so “25 Special Collection $25 cover”) or simply text “Cover fees on” to cover fees on all text gifts. For online giving go to uuclb.org/give.
