“Calling All Holy Troublemakers”
with Heather Vickery (she/her)
As many of you know, our trans and gender expansive beloveds are under attack and being criminalized in many US states right now. This is so serious that they fit the criteria to be designated as internally displaced people (IDPs) by the United Nations. This isn't the first time fascism has reared its ugly head, and we as UU's know how to respond. UUSC has been dedicated to aiding people being targeted by fascism since our founding in 1940. Our faith calls us to make holy trouble for the powers that would deny anyone's full humanity and divinity. Join us, holy troublemakers, now is the time!
|
Heather Vickery (she/her) is the Coordinator for Congregational Activism at the UU Service Committee and as such, works with congregations, state action networks and other groups that want to do their social justice work more effectively and faithfully. She is part of the Congregational Accompaniment Project for Asylum Seekers (CAPAS) team that matches (and supports) congregations with asylum seekers needing sponsorship and coordinates with UUSC’s frontline trans partners working to get our beloveds free and safe through the Pink Haven Coalition. Outside of her paid work, Heather co-coordinates the Beyond Bond & Legal Defense Fund which is part of the wider Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network in Massachusetts and is an active member of her UU church, First Parish Malden and an aspirant to UU Ministry.

Sunday, January 28, 2024 — 10:00am ONSITE and on Zoom and Facebook Live
“Character and Mood in Mozart’s Music” with Dr. Mark Sullivan
On Sunday, January 28, 2024, classical pianist Dr. Mark Sullivan will offer a talk and demonstration on Mozart and his music, with a focus on the composer's solo piano music. Dr. Mark will briefly discuss the style and aesthetics of Classical period music, which was composed during the roughly 80 years from 1750 to 1830. He will offer a brief examination of evolving social and economic contexts during the lives of the Classical period's pre-eminent composers: Josef Haydn, Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Dr. Mark will discuss and perform examples of Mozart's solo piano music and offer insight into aspects of emotional character and interpretation in the language of Mozart's music. The significant role of repetition and contrast in defining form in Classical period music will also be explored.
|
Dr. Mark Sullivan holds his Master of Music degree in piano performance from Indiana University’s Jacob School of Music. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where the Executive Committee honored him as the school’s Outstanding Graduate for 1995. For his achievements in performance at U.S.C., he received the 1995 Keyboard Studies Department Award. Sullivan was also recognized with the 1994 Pi Kappa Lambda Award for graduating with the highest academic standing in his class.

On a Personal Note
This is the last time I will be furnishing you with news from the wider Unitarian Universalist world, although my own interest in that world remains strong. However, it is time for someone else to have the opportunity to be in closer touch with these larger bodies - of which we are ALL a part. My sincere hope is that our members’ knowledge of and involvement with the UU Association, the Pacific Western Region, and the Pacific Southwest Service Area (formerly, District), plus de Benneville Pines will continue to grow. They all have much to offer us. Being a small (but mighty) denomination, we have opportunities to become close to UUs from all across the U.S. and beyond.
It has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve in the position of Denomination Representative for the past several years. If you or someone you know is interested in assuming the role of Denomination Representative, please contact Priscilla Ortiz (Priscilla.ortiz.boardoftrustees@uuclb.org) now.
In gratitude,
Sandy Kroll

Statement of Purpose
Awaken people to their power in social justice activism and advocacy
LA Voice “Listening Campaign” & “Home is Sacred” Narrative has resulted in SB567 being Signed into Law in 2023 – Thank you for supporting this effort:
- Listening to our Congregants
- Postcards & Letters
- Rally at the Capital in Sacramento
- Meetings with our State Representatives & Senators, Long Beach Mayor
- News Conferences with the Press
When we started this journey together back in 2022, we knew the fight to get SB567, the Homelessness Prevention Act, through the legislative cycle and signed into law would be an uphill battle.
Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, we hung on, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

January Skill Up: Community Safety & Security
SKILL UP & TRAININGS - SIGNUP https://secure.everyaction.com/Wj9pXOSMoEa7C5uqMw0SJA2
January 21, 2024 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM PT | Online - National
Unitarian Universalists are called to grapple with the question of what is safety? Black liberation organizers say “We Keep Us Safe" as a way to proclaim that true safety comes from relationship, community and structures of care and mutuality outside of state structures of violence and control. How do we build our political and theological commitment to keeping each other safe in the face of state and interpersonal violence? In this skill up, Nora Rasman and India Harris will define safety and security grounded in abolitionist practice, discuss our spiritual mandate towards building sanctuary and concretely outline what we can honestly offer to ourselves and each other. Agenda includes embodied grounding and interactive training, followed by an optional Q&A Conversation from 5:30-6 ET.
