Praying With Our Feet: Social Justice Sunday Kickoff
with Rev. Lissa and Aliyah Shaikh
“Praying for freedom never did me any good ‘til I started praying with my feet.” – Frederick Douglas
Second Sundays are social justice Sundays here at UUCLB, when we reflect on the ethical and spiritual grounding for our congregation’s commitment to social justice. Today we’ll hear from LA Voice’s Community Congregational Organizer Aliyah Shaikh on how her Muslim faith informs her social justice work, and Rev. Lissa will offer a charge to our congregation and social justice groups. Danny Pravder and Malila Hollow offer a musical collaboration in celebration of Indigenous People’s Day.
| |
Aliyah Shaikh is a Community Organizer for the Long Beach area congregations. LA Voice is a multi-racial, multi-faith community organization that awakens people to their own power, training them to speak, act, and work together to transform our County into one that reflects the dignity of all people.
Malila Hollow is a graduate of the CSULB Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, where she earned both a Bachelors and Masters of Music in Piano Performance. She studied under Mark Uranker and Craig Richey, respectively. Since graduating in 2017, Malila has enjoyed accompanying soloists at conservatories, multiple choir programs, and ballet classes of all levels, as well as teaching piano privately and directing musicals. In 2018, she had the pleasure of attending the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival on 3/4 scholarship and studied under Dr. Dmitri Shteinberg. She has also performed in masterclasses given by Dr. Hyunsoon Whang and Stewart Gordon. Notable performances include the MTAC Solo Piano Recital (2017), Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall (2019), and her appearance in 3 Yamaha Demo videos.

Youth RE
Curricular Day
| |
On October 15, children and youth will “go the distance” to put their faith into action by supporting the Long Beach Marathon runners. They will hand out water and provide moral support, during their October Faith In Action Sunday (A series of monthly activities benefiting others). Children and youth in first grade through High School should gather at the Chalice Building. Sock it to us…literally!
| |
|
Sock it to us…literally
For the entire month of October, we are celebrating SOCKtober, where children and youth are collecting packages of new socks for youth in need. We are especially looking for teen/adult socks, as they are often overlooked in clothing drives. Bring the socks to the RE cart or a Sunday morning classroom.
Contact Laura Scully at 562-822-0200 or lbscully1@gmail.com for more information.

Mistakes and Miracles: Living an Anti-Racist Faith
Rev. Lissa Gundlach with Danny Pravder
Our Unitarian Universalist Association 2022-2023 Common Read Mistakes and Miracles: shares how five diverse congregations encounter frustrations and disappointments, as well as hope and wonder, once they commit to the journey to create multicultural, antiracist Beloved Community. Together, we’ll reflect on the joys and challenges of our UUCLB journey as an antiracist congregation, and what it means to try to live an anti-racist faith.
Please note, today is the Long Beach Marathon, and it may be more difficult than usual to travel to church.

Buddhist Teachings for Mindful UU Life — 10:00am ONSITE and on Zoom and Facebook Live
Rev. Lissa Gundlach and the UUCLB Buddhist Group
Many Unitarian Universalists draw from Buddhist traditions to inform their spiritual lives. Lama Surya Das writes in Buddhist Voices in Unitarian Universalism: “Buddhism and Unitarian Universalism value many of the same things, including experiential practice, study and self-inquiry, mindful awareness cultivation, insightful wisdom development, and loving-kindness, combined with active compassion in the world.” Today’s sermon will be a “dharma talk” from Rev. Lissa, and members of our UUCLB Buddhist community will lead us in meditation.

Board Listening Session: Staff Transitions
Come join the Board of Trustees after the service for a congregational listening session to share thoughts and feelings about Staff Transitions.
Our congregation has entered a period of staff transition with the resignations of three staff members – Accompanist Ronin del Castillo, Director of Music Ministries Francisco Ruiz, and Director of Religious Education Naomi Yoshida. Come share feelings, wishes, and questions about transitions, as together we recommit to diverse and inclusive staffing, grounded in our UUCLB mission “to lead by creating a multi-cultural, anti-racist, anti-oppressive congregation and denomination.”

"We Count What Matters" BIPOC Census Survey
Everyone who identifies as BIPOC: Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color, including bi-racial, are asked to complete the DRUUMM (Diverse and Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries) Census Survey by October 1.
This census is a collaborative initiative between DRUUMM and UUA leaders. The greater UU community has lacked accurate data on its BIPOC population. This census data will give us a deeper understanding of our BIPOC population that will guide future ministries. It will also build meaningful relationships within the BIPOC community.
To have a thorough census, your help is requested to include any BIPOC connected to our church or has in the past been connected. Responses from former friends or members, spouses and their children, people who have moved away or stopped attending, etc. are requested to be included. Please share this link https://www.uuclb.org/act/racial-justice/2023-census-form/ to anyone you may know and fill out the survey yourself.
If you have any questions contact the DRUUMM Census co-chairs Kathy Adams & Jimmy Brink at BIPOCDemographicSurvey@uuclb.org.

1. Climate Change
2023 Farm Bill
The 2023 Farm Bill presents an important opportunity to create a food and agricultural system that provides healthy food for all while helping to avoid a climate crisis and improving equity for consumers and producers.
We're joining allies in the faith and farming communities to redirect 2023 Farm Bill funding to promote conservation and climate-smart regenerative farming practices that protect the health of our soil and food, redirect funds to small-scale operations, fight climate change, and make our agricultural and food system more equitable and secure.
We urge Senators to strengthen programs in the 2030 Farm Bill that help avoid climate change while providing healthy food for all and supporting farmers with the greatest need for assistance.
