Joys and Sorrows
2 Sorrows from Tatyana Nagorski:
My dad was moved to a nursing home after being diagnosed with dementia.
My Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer that has spread to her lungs, stomach and lymph nodes. There is no treatment. She will be moving to hospice this week.
A Joy from Lynne Herchenroether: Last week we shared in the joy of my granddaughter Kaden, as she was playing with her USA sled hockey team in the World Championships in Slovakia. The USA played in the final match against Canada and brought home the Gold! I am so proud of Kaden and her team.
A Joy from Julie Kant: The Celebration Garden Committee joyfully announces the completion of the memorial walls (we are still working on the plants at that base of the walls). Come out and take a look!
A Sorrow from From Erin Terrizzi: On Sunday morning, Erin's Mom, Mary, passed away peacefully. This past Labor Day weekend, the immediate family, Erin's Mom & Dad, brother, Karl, Amy, Erin & Evie were all able to celebrate life and being in nature, something very important to Erin's Mom. Thank you all for your healing & comforting thoughts & prayers as we manage this difficult time.
A Joy from Scott Gorham: He has been accepted into a 3 month clinical trial. He will be spending most of the time at the clinic, with brief breaks in between sessions at home.
Words of encouragement are welcome in the form of texts or emails. Their contact information is available in Breeze.
Note: When you want to share a joy or sorrow submit it electronically by clicking here by Saturday. Alternatively, you can fill out a card as you enter the sanctuary on Sunday.

Open Mic Night -Tonight!
You are invited to be entertained by your talented friends on September 12th, at 7:30pm. The West Room stage will be an open mic for anyone interested in singing a song, telling a joke, telling an interesting story, or ranting about the news — let’s keep it non-political.
Here's an idea -- make it a date night! Go out with some friends for dinner and come by the UUCNH Open Mic Night (formerly known as Coffeehouse) for entertainment. You'll have this opportunity every second Friday of the month at 7:30pm

Coffee Hour Needs you!
Building on our commitment to being a welcoming congregation offering radical hospitality, we want to reiterate our coffee hour protocol.
Every Sunday, please:
- bring a little something to eat*
- pitch in to load the dishwashers and throw out the trash-many hands make light work
- take home any leftovers from your contribution
A Few Times a Year, please:
- pick a Sunday to start the coffee, dress the tables, and put out cups, plates, and flatware
- sign up on the large sign-up sheet in Friendship Hall
Just as in the Stone Soup parable, if we all bring a little of what we have, everyone will feast! Without volunteers willing to sign up, there can be no coffee hour. Please do your part and keep coffee hour alive!
*That little something could be an apple, a hunk of cheese, a sleeve of crackers, a plate of brownies, or even leftover frittata from your garden party!

September 2025 Capital Campaign (CC)'22 Status Summary
The monthly CC Status Summary Spreadsheet shows the prioritized project list, our initial estimated cost of each
project, actual contractor quotes we have received for the work and much more.
Please click this link to review the latest CC Status Summary Spreadsheet update.
In the last few months we have continued to push for completion of the on-going projects. Several Projects were started and most were completed in the last month:
- Project 7a: MTV Solar installed Marsha Albright’s gifted solar panels on 14 & 15Aug25.
- Project 11: Pittsburgh Asphalt Company (PAC) paved the Entrance Driveway on 26 & 27Aug25. We had hoped to renew all of our paved surfaces but ultimately, with the AC cost still unknown, decided to do only the work promised in the Enhanced Plan
- Project 10: Vento Landscaping completed the Celebration Garden (CG) Memorial Walls on 3Sept25.
- On-going - Project 4c2: Celebration Garden (CG) Path stormwater runoff erosion: On 8Sept25 Vento Landscaping started the work to install swales and yard drains to control stormwater flow and protect the Celebration Garden paths and a new sidewalk that we hope to complete next spring. If the weather cooperates, this work should be complete within the next two weeks.
The engineering design of the Air Conditioning (AC) project is nearing completion. The AC project is the largest cost project in the CC. The Project Task Force is currently reviewing the permit/bid drawings. We are hopeful that Pedicone Engineering, our mechanical engineer, will complete the drawings and help us with the permitting process. Hopefully we can obtain bids from contractors for the AC work this fall. As mentioned at the annual congregational meeting in June, we have been wary of moving forward with too many other projects until we have a
handle on the AC cost, hence there has been reduced spending of CC funds over the past year. Once we have actual bids from contactors and know the cost of the AC, we will see if we can afford all the remaining projects. At that time we can have an informed conversation with the congregation about how to allocate the remaining CC funds.
We are still working on projects other than the AC. In addition to the projects mentioned above, we have been discussing the Pavilion project with both a supplier and a contractor.
We are trying to self-perform as much of the work as possible. Anyone with a desire to lend a hand is welcome to contact Joe Meier (see below). People with electrical wiring or carpentry skills would be especially welcome. Any questions or offers of help can be sent to Joe Meier at capitalcampaign@uucnh.org.

Ever Considered Being a Poll Worker?
Poll workers are the heart and soul of our electoral process. Do you want to serve our community? Do you believe in free and fair elections? Do you think our democracy works best when ALL votes are counted?
Then, you may enjoy being a poll worker. The requirements for Allegheny County are simple. You must be 18 years old by election day and be registered to vote in Allegheny County. Your time and enthusiasm are the most important requirements.
For more information about serving as a poll worker click here.
Should you wish to talk to one of us who are poll workers at coffee hour or at another time, you may, we are several. Look for someone with a poll worker sticker on their name tag. Thank You for considering doing this community service.

Important Update from Systemic Change

Please attend to your ballots!!
Voter registration deadline: October 20
Mail-in ballot registration deadline: October 28
What you can do if you witness an ICE detention:
Call the 412 736-7167 hotline, put in place by Casa San Jose to document detentions and provide assistance to those being detained, and their families. Its goal is to provide transparency and protect the due process rights of Latino immigrants and citizens. Some of us put the number in our cell phones for rapid use.
You can also participate in interfaith prayer vigils, held each Friday in September from 8-10 a.m. in front of the ICE office at 3000 Sidney St., Pittsburgh 15203. For more info, contact Julie Kant, Lois Madden, Diana Hull, or Susan Minton. It’s quite musical and peaceful!

A message from PIIN regarding the Squirrel Hill apartment fire
Tuesday morning, an intense fire broke out in the Jefferson Apartments in Squirrel Hill, ultimately resulting in the collapse of the building’s roof. First responders successfully evacuated all residents with no injuries or loss of human life, but dozens of people remain displaced.
You can help by giving directly to the JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, the Jewish Assistance Fund, and the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania.
The JFCS Squirrel Hill Food Pantry and East End Cooperative Ministry are also accepting in-kind donations once housing is secured. (Please call ahead before dropping off your donation.)
If you or someone you know has been affected by the fire, the organizations above offer support with food, shelter, and/or emergency financial assistance.
We are keeping our neighbors in our hearts as they recover and rebuild.
