Our First Principle & Handling Conversations Across Difference

Rev. Lee Anne Washington

This is the last Sunday of our five part series on how the First Principle applies to our dealings with people we don’t understand and often oppose. Building on last Sunday’s handout, we will take a deep dive into ways to apply our First Principle when we face difficult conversations with people whose point of view differs significantly from our own.

Using a short packet, small discussion groups will share ideas about how to handle two short scenarios. The packet includes individual reflection questions for at home use (or for those not wanting to participate in the discussion groups) and two spiritual practices for everyone to use. No research or electronic devices will be required.

Expect this service to last 90 minutes.

Instead of time for all ages, children should proceed directly upstairs to Children's Chapel upon arrival.

A Joy and Sorrow from Dick Myers:

A Sorrow: Dick and Marilyn Myers had a car accident on last Friday. Marilyn was in Mercy hospital with a sternum fracture and pulmonary contusion.

A Joy: Dick is fine and Marilyn is home and on the mend, though it will be a long road. Marilyn would love to receive cards and phone calls of well wishes from the congregation.

Note: When you want to share a joy or sorrow submit it electronically by clicking here by Saturday. Alternatively, you can fill out a card as you enter the sanctuary on Sunday.

Transforming Ourselves

Mitten Tree - Donations Wanted

On Sunday, December 7th, we will hear the story of The Mitten Tree (written by Candace Christiansen and illustrated by Elaine Greenstein).

A second tree in the sanctuary will be designated as our “Mitten Tree.” As you remember, please bring unwrapped new mittens scarves and socks to place on the boughs. Wrapped packages of men's and women’s underwear to go under the tree are also appreciated. There will be boxes and baskets to receive them. Our children and youth will decorate the Mitten Tree with your donations during the service on the 7th. These much-needed items will be delivered to a shelter after the holidays.

Veterans Place of Pittsburgh

The Mission of Veterans Place is to empower veterans’ transition from homeless to home, ending the cycle of homelessness, and to assist all at-risk veterans to become engaged, valuable citizens who contribute to their communities. Veterans Place accomplishes this mission by providing a Veterans Resource Center (a drop-in service center), transitional housing and workforce development to veterans in the Pittsburgh region. Another Opportunity to Help Refugee Families

The Compassionate Service Team is collaborating with Jewish Family Community Services (JFCS) this holiday season to support several refugee families in our area.

We will be spending funds that have been graciously donated by UUCNH friends and members in order to provide larger items such as cribs and mattresses, which are much appreciated. The items we will be collecting include baby essentials such as diapers, wipes, and gently used toys/books that UUCNH volunteers will then deliver directly to the families. This is where we need your help!

Please visit the SignUp Genius link here to see if there's something you might sign up to donate. Items can be dropped of at church wherever you see the Refugee Home Set-Up sign. The last day for dropping off items will be Sunday, December 14. Thank you!
