Multigenerational Service

When the Waters Rise

Rev. Lee Anne Washington

With news of mass deportations, soldiers in the streets, and cease fires around the world being rejected, emotions are running high. We will explore some Buddhist lessons about how to build an island of refuge that no flood of emotion can overwhelm.

As summertime comes to an end, we Unitarian Universalists gather together for water communion. You are invited to bring a little water from the nearest water source (run, stream, pond, river, your faucet) to contribute to our communal bowl. You’ll also receive a blessing from our shared water communion. If you are able, please bring a contribution to the potluck lunch that will follow. Drinks will be provided by the church.

Please note: this service may run overtime as there is no way to know how long water communion will take. So, please bring your patience along with your water! Water will be available for those who forget.

Children's RE Schedule

09/07 Multigenerational service - Water communion - No RE

09/14 - Children's Chapel - Children will start the service in classroom.

Joys and Sorrows

A Joy from From Connie and John Ritzert: We wish to thank the UUCNH family for the love and care you have shown us over the last month as we've been dealing with Connie's injuries from a fall, July 29, and John's Lyme disease shortly thereafter. We are recovering, but not quite back to full vigor. There are too many names to thank here, but please know how much you are all appreciated. This truly is our community.

A Joy from From Caren Franco: I celebrated my birthday weekend with dinner with my husband and younger daughter on Friday, and then spent some time Saturday afternoon (my actual birthday) at the Beaver County Democrats booth at the Big Knob Grange Fair.

A Joy from From Lynne Herchenroether: On Sunday, my 20-year-old granddaughter Kaden, took part in the 2025 Women's World Championships in Slovakia with her Women's Sled Hockey Team. The USA team won all their games, playing against Australia, Norway, and Great Britain, and finally Canada to take the championship. Kaden attends the University of Pittsburgh and lives in Hampton.

A Sorrow from From Erin Terrizzi: My mother, Mary Moll, has become too sick for chemo treatment and is currently in hospice care. There is still a chance that she could become well enough to start chemo again, but we are concentrating on making Mary comfortable right now. Amy and I probably will not be at church for the foreseeable future, taking runs on the weekends down to Carlisle, PA to see family.

Note: When you want to share a joy or sorrow submit it electronically by clicking here by Saturday. Alternatively, you can fill out a card as you enter the sanctuary on Sunday.

Celebrating Life

Kids Night Out - Tonight!

Bocce and Giant Jenga - Tomorrow

Join us for Bocce and Giant Jenga in Friendship Hall this Saturday September 6th 10:30am - Noon. Please bring a friend, all are welcome. No experience necessary

Open Mic Night

You are invited to be entertained by your talented friends on September 12th, at 7:30pm. The West Room stage will be an open mic for anyone interested in singing a song, telling a joke, telling an interesting story, or ranting about the news — let’s keep it non-political.

Here's an idea -- make it a date night! Go out with some friends for dinner and come by the UUCNH Open Mic Night (formerly known as Coffeehouse) for entertainment. You'll have this opportunity every second Friday of the month at 7:30pm

Coffee Hour Needs you!

Building on our commitment to being a welcoming congregation offering radical hospitality, we want to reiterate our coffee hour protocol.

Every Sunday, please:

  • bring a little something to eat*
  • pitch in to load the dishwashers and throw out the trash-many hands make light work
  • take home any leftovers from your contribution

A Few Times a Year, please:

  • pick a Sunday to start the coffee, dress the tables, and put out cups, plates, and flatware
  • sign up on the large sign-up sheet in Friendship Hall

Just as in the Stone Soup parable, if we all bring a little of what we have, everyone will feast! Without volunteers willing to sign up, there can be no coffee hour. Please do your part and keep coffee hour alive!

*That little something could be an apple, a hunk of cheese, a sleeve of crackers, a plate of brownies, or even leftover frittata from your garden party!

Virtual Pastoral Care Program for Trans People and Their Families

The Woodlands is a monthly online gathering designed for trans children, youth, and adults—as well as the parents and caregivers of trans people. Each session will begin with a shared message and grounding ritual, followed by breakout rooms tailored to different communities within our circle, and we come back together for a release. Sessions will be about an hour and a half.

Each breakout room—co-facilitated by two chaplains—will offer space for meaningful check-ins where we can honor our grief, celebrate our joy, and support one another. The spirit of each room will reflect the people within it.

Transforming Our World

Important Update from Systemic Change

We have a crucial vote on November 4, 2025, when three PA Supreme Court Justices, who have worked hard to maintain various of our freedoms, are up for retention for another ten years.

Please attend to your ballots!!

Voter registration deadline: October 20

Mail-in ballot registration deadline: October 28

What you can do if you witness an ICE detention:

Call the 412 736-7167 hotline, put in place by Casa San Jose to document detentions and provide assistance to those being detained, and their families. Its goal is to provide transparency and protect the due process rights of Latino immigrants and citizens. Some of us put the number in our cell phones for rapid use.

You can also participate in interfaith prayer vigils, held each Friday in September from 8-10 a.m. in front of the ICE office at 3000 Sidney St., Pittsburgh 15203. For more info, contact Julie Kant, Lois Madden, Diana Hull, or Susan Minton. It’s quite musical and peaceful!
