Our First Principle and the Enemy

Rev. Lee Anne Washington

As we affirm and promote our first principle - the inherent worth and dignity of every person - we can find ourselves wrestling with what to do about those we might perceive to be our enemies. It’s an age-old question. Join Rev. Lee Anne in the first of a five part study. We will begin by exploring different understandings of what it means to be wicked, evil, or an enemy and the parameters of compassion.

The complete study will explore the wisdom of various religious and philosophical traditions; some parables and fables; and guidance from such organizations as the Charter for Compassion. By the end, we will perceive some common themes and have a deeper understanding of what is ours to do.

Phishing Scam: Be Alert!

Other UU churches have reported that yet another phishing scam is making the rounds of churches in which scammers, sometimes posing as church members and employees, are asking for copies of directories of church members.

They are sending “spoof” e-mails that appear to be from church-affiliated people and are making phone calls that appear to be from the church’s telephone number. Scammers try to get directories either for doxing and harassment purposes or to sell the information on the black market.

No one from UUCNH will ask you to give them a directory or other confidential information, nor will anyone ask you to purchase gift cards for them. Please do not respond to these types of requests. If you need to contact someone, please use contact information that you already have from a trusted source.

Join us on the October, 26th, from noon to 1:15 PM on Zoom and at church (upstairs, left, then end of the hall). Palestine was a sad place for peasants to exist in the first century. Roman oppression spawned many efforts to return to Jewish independence. Some of the leaders were even called messiahs. The Story begins. See Tony Palermo for details.

Joys and Sorrows

From John and Carol Ballance, a joy and a sorrow: Our daughter Kelsey is home briefly this weekend, which is a joy. The sorrow is that she is here to attend a memorial service for a friend.

From Tony Palermo, a sorrow: This week, my wife Pat lost two people dear to us; Her cousin, George who taught her to drive and her maid of honor, Audrey. They have been friends since they were 10.

From Tony Palermo, a joy: Yesterday, my wife Pat and I celebrated our 56th anniversary. We met 6 years before, dated for 6 years, and then tied the knot. I'd do it again in a minute.

Note: When you want to share a joy or sorrow submit it electronically by clicking here by Saturday. Alternatively, you can fill out a card as you enter the sanctuary on Sunday.
