October, the 5th, from noon – 1:15 PM on Zoom and at church (upstairs, left, then end of the hall).
Eternal Life can be a very short discussion…or if you review the world’s religions, a much longer, even necessary one. Neuroscience weighs in here too.

Joys and Sorrows
A Joy from Bruce Travers: My brothers and sister are in Pittsburgh. Yesterday we interred our mother's ashes in a lovely ceremony. Later today, we will scatter our father's ashes according to his wishes. It has been wonderful to come together from four different states to share memories, tears and laughter. I am blessed to have such amazing siblings!
A Joy from Marsha Albright: Today, after the service, seven members and friends of UUCNH have the joy of volunteering at the Three RIVERS Indian Council POW Wow preparing and serving food to attendees of the POW WOW. I am overjoyed to have the opportunity to give back to our Native American Community.
Note: When you want to share a joy or sorrow submit it electronically by clicking here by Saturday. Alternatively, you can fill out a card as you enter the sanctuary on Sunday.

Ready, Set Bake!!
Do you like to bake? Would you like to help bring in revenue from outside the
church? We need lots of baked goods for Election Day!
The Fundraising Committee has recently restarted. Our first event will be an
Election Day Bake Sale on November 4, which will take advantage of our location
as a polling place and allow us to raise funds from the larger community.
We’re looking for donated cookies, brownies, cupcakes, Rice Krispie treats, loaf
breads – any baked goods that don’t require refrigeration!
Sign up to donate baked goods here:
Bakers will receive detailed instructions on packaging and labeling after signing
up. Bags and labels will be available. You’ll drop your goodies off at church on Sunday, Nov 2 or Monday, Nov 3. We’ll set up the table Monday evening.
We also need a few people to join us at the table on Election Day.
Sign up to sell baked goods on Election Day here:
If you have questions, e-mail us at Fundraising@uucnh.org or contact any
committee member.
Thank you!
Fundraising Committee (Lou Bartolomucci, Dawn Lindsay, Brian Luebbert-Hill,

The Righteous Mind Book Discussion Group
The importance – and difficulty – of communicating across political and cultural differences is
uppermost in many minds. The schisms in our society today were well underway in 2012 when
social psychologist Jonathan Haidt wrote “The Righteous Mind – why good people are divided
by politics and religion.”
As a founder of Moral Foundations Theory, Haidt suggests that humans, through our evolutional history, have come to possess innate psychological "foundations" for morality-- such as care, fairness, loyalty, authority, and sanctity/purity, which are shaped by culture, experience, and gut feeling. Different individuals and groups value some of those foundations more than others, making effective communication a challenge – we’re often talking past one another.
If you are interested in discussing this book – and its applicability to our 7 Principles – please click here to register and share your preferred date and time. I anticipate that the book will merit four sessions.
Best Regards
Dick Myers

Current Share the Plate Recipient
Casa San Jose
Their Mission: to create a Pittsburgh region that celebrates culture, welcomes immigrants, and embraces inclusion, dignity, and respect. Casa San José is a lifeline for many in Allegheny County, especially during times of crisis like ICE detentions, which often leave families without income or basic necessities. Any help would be much appreciated. https://casasanjose.org/en/

Hygiene Supplies for Refugees
We have had a special request from the JFCS (Jewish Family Community Services) for hygiene items for refugee families.
They are hoping to offer a variety of hygiene items to clients in their support groups and those who attend cultural orientations this month.
This will likely be our last collection of 2025 so let's finish strong! Please visit the SignUp Genius link and let us know what you can donate. Last day for drop off at UUCNH will be October 12. Thank you for your continued support for resettled refugee families in Pittsburgh.

Retention Election for Judges
In Pennsylvania, judges serve for a 10-year term after which they are on the ballot for a “retention” election. Voters will be asked a simple question: Do you want to keep this judge for another 10 year term?
The Supreme Court shapes state law with real impact on our lives. In recent opinions and decisions, the Justices have affirmed that:
- The PA Congressional map deprived voters’ of their right to “free and equal” elections as protected by the PA Constitution.
- Voters can use a provisional ballot if their mail-in ballot was rejected for missing a secrecy envelope.
- Reproductive decisions should be made between a woman and her doctor.
- LGBTQ+ rights deserve constitutional protections.
- The Fifth Amendment protects people from being forced to hand over their digital passwords.
