Help Us with a Monthly Food & Supply Drive for our Navajo Nation Community
At the end of June, a second truck full of supplies was delivered to the Navajo reservation for the extended family and community friends of a UUCP member. A wonderful team of folks came together again to donate funds, shop, store, and deliver it all to make this happen – and the recipients, many of whom are recovering from COVID or caring for them, were very appreciative. Recovery takes time for the elders, and more people continue to be infected. We are beginning another collection which will be delivered mid-August, and would appreciate your help. If you are able to contribute and are not already on the team list, please use this form to let us know how you would be willing to be involved.  Many thanks for your generosity.

A Report Back on General Assembly
By: Benjie Messer
Hello, members of UUCP! Many of you heard that I was the Music Coordinator of this year’s General Assembly (GA), an annual convention and business meeting of thousands of Unitarian Universalists. This was the first fully online GA, and I want to share some highlights of my experience.

Maryland School
Back to School Supply Drive

School is starting, with many concerns and a variety of formats. Children want to learn and teachers want to facilitate that, safely and successfully, however it can be managed. Our goal with the Maryland School Project is to support their efforts where we can, budgets are even more stretched this year, and they still need school supplies to give out during the semester to children when they pick up their Chromebooks, breakfast/lunch bags, and other instructional materials.
Here is a sign-up link with more details and the list of supplies they have suggested.  We would be very grateful for an online order of supplies or a donation for us to shop.

Civic Engagement Announcements
  • Invest in Ed needs your help! The Invest in Ed movement is appealing to the Arizona Supreme Court to make it possible for the initiative to be on the November 3 ballot. The Supreme Court has the power to overturn a ruling against the initiative by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge last week. Find out more here about the initiative, including four choices to support the appeal: Volunteer, Write a testimonial, Sign a letter (if you’re a business owner), or Donate funds. The hundreds of millions of dollars expected to be raised by the Invest in Education Act would be spent in and supporting K-12 classrooms. See where the money will go here.

  • ICE’s secret hotel detention of children. Last week we asked you to affirm Sen. Sinemaand Rep. Stanton’s quick action to end the secret children of asylum-seekers in a Phoenix hotel. This past week more information has come out that ICE’s practice is widespread around the country. Read more (here). To keep the pressure on, please consider writing a letter to relevant people and agencies. (Here) is a link to a sample letter and addresses.

Led By:
Rev. Christine Dance

Scholars believe that we are in the final turn of a great generational cycle--one of great destruction but also of creation. We will explore what this great turning can create for us--as a world, nation and congregation.

For 37 years, Camelot Therapeutic Horsemanship has provided weekly free riding lessons to Phoenix valley children and adults with disabilities. Each student is supported by their PATH Intl. certified riding instructor and as many as 5 caring volunteers overseeing the lesson, the student’s safety, needs and abilities. Their 38th lesson season begins this September at their wheelchair accessible Scottsdale ranch and all necessary precautions will be taken for everyone’s safety during the COVID crisis. Funding received will be used to offset expenses associated with the care and maintenance of their therapy horses. To view their website click HERE and to watch a short video that shows and explains their philosophy click HERE.

Wednesdays @ 5:30-7pm
Aug 19th, 26th, & Sept 2nd
You've participated in Q+A's about the call to defund police, and our faith movement. Now, get into the details about how that looks in policies and budgets.
UUJAZ invites you to join a multi-part discussion about the BREATHE Act and its proposals, including a nationwide defunding of police. This will be a guided discussion, facilitated by UUJAZ staff member Thoi held across three one and a half hour sessions, Wednesday nights, 5:30-7:00pm. Our first session will cover the BREATHE Act and its specific proposals, as well as taking an overview of the MPD150 project and report. The second section will focus on the “Past” section of the MPD150 report, which looks at 150 years of policing in Minneapolis and its outcomes. The final session will wrap us up with a look at the “Present” and “Future” portions of the report, which go in depth to discuss community perspectives on policing through interviews, and presents alternatives to policing and a path to get there through political action.
Thursdays @ 7-8pm,
Aug 6th - September 10th
Are you a congregational leader, on the membership team, board, faith development, worship team, leadership development... or any role?
What does it look like for UU's to be anti-racist and anti-oppressive within our own congregation? Join Janine and UUJAZ to read the Commission on Institutional Change's report "Widening the Circle of Concern" compiled over three years of interviews and research, analyzing structural and systemic racism. Discuss the specific, recommended actions, and how they could translate into actions in our UU congregations in Arizona, to advance long-term cultural and institutional change that redeems the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism.
The commission's report is available free to read online, or as a downloadable PDF for a limited time, or can be purchased from the UUA bookstore, InSpirit.
Fridays @ 10-11am
Join UUJAZ Executive Director Janine Gelsinger any Friday morning for a casual "office hours" on Zoom. Since we aren't traveling around the state, Janine misses the informal opportunities to chat after service, or in the hallway, because its often where the best ideas are born! Bring your questions, chat about the social justice news this week in AZ, or suggest what programming you'd like to see UUJAZ do next.
