Help Us with a Monthly Food & Supply Drive for our Navajo Nation Community
At the end of June, a second truck full of supplies was delivered to the Navajo reservation for the extended family and community friends of a UUCP member. A wonderful team of folks came together again to donate funds, shop, store, and deliver it all to make this happen – and the recipients, many of whom are recovering from COVID or caring for them, were very appreciative. Recovery takes time for the elders, and more people continue to be infected. We are beginning another collection which will be delivered mid-August, and would appreciate your help. If you are able to contribute and are not already on the team list, please use this form to let us know how you would be willing to be involved .  Many thanks for your generosity.

Civic Engagement Announcements
  • We encourage you to email or call Sen. Sinema and Rep. Stanton to thank them for their ongoing inquiries into ICE’s secret detention of the children of asylum-seekers in Phoenix hotels, and encourage them to continue to advocate for asylum seekers’ human rights. You can read the story here. Although Sen. McSally is unlikely to be open to the same dialogue, it wouldn’t hurt to express your feelings to her as well.

  • ICE is a division of The Department of Homeland Security, as is the Border Patrol, whose agents are being sent to bully protesters in Portland and other target cities. You can contact the same officials as above to voice your concern about this situation.

Earth Justice Ministry

The Breathe Act and the Network of Spiritual Progressives are possible positive ways into a better future.  I'd like to discuss them at our next meeting, Sunday, August 9th at 12:30 on zoom. Details to follow, but you can familiarize yourself before then at: / the-breathe-act-would-defund-police-and-fund-environmental-justice/  and

Rev. Michael Lerner is the editor of tikkun magazine, and author of the book, "Revolutionary Love" which proposes a more compassionate future.
Look for more books, podcasts, webinars and films on our part of the website.

Earth Justice Ministry would like to share a video about how to stop future pandemics. It was brought to our attention by Anne Lackey:

I also want to introduce our UU the Vote Coordinator, Casey Clowes.

Wednesdays @ 5:30-7pm
Aug 19th, 26th, & Sept 2nd
You've participated in Q+A's about the call to defund police, and our faith movement. Now, get into the details about how that looks in policies and budgets.
UUJAZ invites you to join a multi-part discussion about the BREATHE Act and its proposals, including a nationwide defunding of police. This will be a guided discussion, facilitated by UUJAZ staff member Thoi held across three one and a half hour sessions, Wednesday nights, 5:30-7:00pm. Our first session will cover the BREATHE Act and its specific proposals, as well as taking an overview of the MPD150 project and report. The second section will focus on the “Past” section of the MPD150 report, which looks at 150 years of policing in Minneapolis and its outcomes. The final session will wrap us up with a look at the “Present” and “Future” portions of the report, which go in depth to discuss community perspectives on policing through interviews, and presents alternatives to policing and a path to get there through political action.
Thursdays @ 7-8pm,
Aug 6th - September 10th
Are you a congregational leader, on the membership team, board, faith development, worship team, leadership development... or any role?
What does it look like for UU's to be anti-racist and anti-oppressive within our own congregation? Join Janine and UUJAZ to read the Commission on Institutional Change's report "Widening the Circle of Concern" compiled over three years of interviews and research, analyzing structural and systemic racism. Discuss the specific, recommended actions, and how they could translate into actions in our UU congregations in Arizona, to advance long-term cultural and institutional change that redeems the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism.
The commission's report is available free to read online , or as a downloadable PDF for a limited time, or can be purchased from the UUA bookstore, InSpirit.
Fridays @ 10-11am
Join UUJAZ Executive Director Janine Gelsinger any Friday morning for a casual "office hours" on Zoom. Since we aren't traveling around the state, Janine misses the informal opportunities to chat after service, or in the hallway, because its often where the best ideas are born! Bring your questions, chat about the social justice news this week in AZ, or suggest what programming you'd like to see UUJAZ do next.
