Great UU Sermons - Led by Roy Miller

Let’s take an hour each month to study a classic sermon from an important UU Minister from history. We will start with Emerson's Harvard Divinity School Address of 1838. This address, which was highly controversial at the time, brought concepts of Transcendentalism into Unitarianism. We will meet the second Wednesday of the month at 3 pm, starting Dec 10. Click HERE to register to get on the email list for the Zoom link.  If you have questions, please contact Roy at rmiller451@aol.com.

Adventure Tales
A Radically Inclusive Evening of Storytelling
Each one of us has stories that we tell our friends and family about events in our lives that were adventurous, exciting, painful, embarrassing – and it is usually what went wrong rather than what went right that makes a good story. Learn how to tell a good story at the free storytelling workshop put on by Storytellers Project on either December 2 or December 12 on Zoom. This is not a commitment to submit a story to Adventure Tales – anyone can sign up that wants to improve their skills.

Our Navajo Nation Student
Blanket & Clothing Drive
Thanks to the generosity of so many of you we now have a truck load of blankets, quilts (new and used) and jackets/boots/hats/gloves to deliver to Tsaile and Many Farms Schools, as well as other families in the Navajo Nation the week of the 16th. They have already had snow, temperatures way below freezing, so these will be so welcomed!

The latest report from leaders of the Native American Baha’i Institute Youth Group tells us that their fourteen teams of young people, from middle school to age twenty-eight, have traveled many miles, cut, delivered and stacked 150 loads of wood for stoves to keep people warm over the winter, fixing chimneys and stoves in the process. With your help we contributed funds for equipment to help them expand their teams of kids for this amazing work, supporting their community and building relationships, including many elders who live far out.

If you are able to help by making a donation for our ongoing work with the Navajo Nation, please click the link to sign upand we will send you information. We have received such warm appreciation for our assistance – one auntie thinks of us as her “guardian angels.” UUCP is full of warm hearts and helping hands – Thank you for your generosity!

Civic Engagement Announcements
  • Bill Moyers, in 2016, presented an article called The Real Thanksgiving Story, which we encourage you to read in order to rethink the narrative that many of us learned in school. Excerpt: “The truths are...quite well documented. Their concealment within a simplistic story…depicts a convoluted reality about the Indigenous peoples who played crucial roles...and presents an exaggerated valorization about the settlers’ roles.”
  • Also in the spirit of Thanksgiving, you can quickly express your gratitude to Katie Hobbs, AZ Secretary of State, for a fair election.
  • Continue to get out the vote in the Georgia Senate runoff election. Get Out the Vote campaign letter-writing continues through December 7. Go to Vote Forward to join UUCP's extended Civic Engagement team to inspire voter participation by sending at least five letters (or many more).

Earth Justice Ministry Announcements
A big round of applause goes to all of you who wrote and called the AZ Corporation Commissioners to vote in the Clean Energy Rules Package. The vote on Friday November 13 was 4-1 to adopt the package. It did not include requirements for utilities to set amounts of renewable energy (wind and solar), however. But it did require utilities to generate electricity 100% carbon-free by 2050 with interim benchmarks. Please contact them again to thank them. Their contact info. is on the UUCP Earth Justice website.

Also, there is still time to write and call the ACC to request them to not approve APS's request for another rate hike, and to ask APS to forgive electric bills that have accrued to families without the means to pay due to COVID. You can do this whether you are an APS customer or not.  Monday, November 30, 2020:
10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is the last public comment period that you may call in to. Instructions are at  https://www.phoenixuu.org/aps-rate-hike-public-comment/

Advent: The Season of Waiting

Led By:
Rev. Christine Dance
&
Worship Associate
Sam Kirkland
For Christians, the season of Advent is all about waiting.
As we are waiting for so many things during this time,
we will explore the deeper meanings of the season.
We will donate our Share the Plate
December 6th to Camp de Benneville Pines
UUCP members have enjoyed the Camp and its programs since its founding in 1961 by our former minister, Rev. Ray Manker. The camp had to cease operations in March due to Covid-19 and in September, the El Dorado fire threatened to destroy it. An “Emergency Fund” was started to protect and preserve the camp until it can reopen. For more information, visit https://www.uucamp.org/covid-19-and-camp/

The Camp newsletter and a thank you letter from the Executive Director are available on our website at https://www.phoenixuu.org/stp/
