Many people have lost jobs or have reduced income due to Covid 19. Chispa is asking us to help by commenting on APS's request to the AZ Corporation Commission for a rate hike on electricity. The ACC has many dates and times to phone in your comments, or they will accept emails or letters. Either of the links below have more information on how and when to do that. You don't have to be an APS customer to comment.
The Cookbook Committee celebrates the submission of our first great vegan recipe by Ruth Shada! Yea!! Please send yours to us at uuejministry@gmail.com by 10/16 to assure it gets to us in time.

Help Us with a Monthly Food & Supply Drive for our Navajo Nation Community
|
|
Many thanks to all those who helped make it possible for UUCP to deliver last week a large supply of food, cleaning and health safety materials to our friends up on the Navajo Nation. It was, again, a wonderful team effort of donations, purchases, storage and delivery. A large amount of cleaning work and food preparation is shared around the community which is spread out over a large area, all very much appreciated by the people who participate in this work and those who benefit. We anticipate making another delivery the beginning of October. If you are able to contribute and are not already on the team list, please use this form to let us know how you would be willing to be involved. Many thanks for your generosity.

Navajo Nation – Wood Youth Project
Through our work on the Navajo Nation with the extended family of one of our congregants, we have also learned about a wonderful project begun eight years ago by the local Bahai fellowship. A cadre of middle school students has been gathered to provide service to the community, and as the youth grow older they become mentors for the younger ones. As part of preserving culture and language, the young people are learning to see their everyday chores – which are many, including carrying out ashes from the wood burning stove, feeding and herding livestock, visiting elders – not as chores, but as opportunities for service.

Maryland School
Back to School Supply Drive
Maryland School has completed the third week of online learning in this time of social isolation, with many students struggling to be focused and engaged, especially when the home situation does not provide the needed level of assistance. Teachers continue to learn new technology and ways to work with students in the virtual classrooms, spending many extra hours in preparation. As the school provides breakfast and lunch bags, we are supporting their efforts to give out supplies as well. We thank all of you who have generously contributed to that effort - the school administration has expressed their gratitude for our community of giving. This will be the last week of our collection, so if you are able to donate, please see the attached form for a list of needed supplies and a way to give.
Here is a sign-up link with more details and the list of supplies they have suggested. We would be very grateful for an online order of supplies or a donation for us to shop.

UUCP Video Choir
Singing together is one of the fastest ways to spread an airborne illness like COVID-19, and choirs may be unsafe even when we start meeting in person again. UUCP is a singing congregation, so this is sad for all of us, but particularly for the many UUCP musicians and singers who found community in making music together- in our choir, ukulele song circle, and small ensembles.

It is September, the month we traditionally welcome folks "back" from the summer, and begin our program year at some of our congregations. This year is different. How will we use this virtual time to connect with each other, and ourselves, in our anti-racism, anti-oppression work? As November elections creep closer, how do our UU values fall when it comes to candidates? The choices we make, now, in how to invest our time, will determine how the racial uprising ends, how the elections are decided, and whether we Side With Love in our actions and not just our words.

Friday September 18th
Unapologetic
by Charlene Carruthers
A manifesto from one of America’s most influential activists which disrupts political, economic, and social norms by reimagining the Black Radical Tradition.
Drawing on Black intellectual and grassroots organizing traditions, including the Haitian Revolution, the US civil rights movement, and LGBTQ rights and feminist movements, Unapologetic challenges all of us engaged in the social justice struggle to make the movement for Black liberation more radical, more queer, and more feminist. This book provides a vision for how social justice movements can become sharper and more effective through principled struggle, healing justice, and leadership development. It also offers a flexible model of what deeply effective organizing can be, anchored in the Chicago model of activism, which features long-term commitment, cultural sensitivity, creative strategizing, and multiple cross-group alliances. And Unapologetic provides a clear framework for activists committed to building transformative power, encouraging young people to see themselves as visionaries and leaders.

Conversation with the Candidates:
Homelessness and our Faith
As Unitarian Universalists, we honor the inherent worth and dignity of our unsheltered neighbors. We are called to work for a just, equitable, and compassionate world, where everyone has the resources needed not just to survive, but to thrive. These beliefs push us beyond serving folks in need, to advocating for policies that eradicate homelessness altogether.
Join us Tuesday, September 22nd, on Facebook Live at 6 pm, for a conversation with community members of Surprise and Sun City, candidates running for LD22, and guest speaker Sophia of Unsheltered Phoenix, hosted by Unitarian Universalist Justice Arizona.

Last Call to UU The Vote
This November, we have an opportunity to reflect our UU values in local policy more than ever. Can we ensure free and safe elections? End cash bail and contracts with private prisons? Hold police accountable? Empower those most vulnerable to pandemic and racism? Fund education?
None of this will happen without you. We have less than a month before ballots drop, so NOW is the time to have conversations with people you know, or join a phone or text bank. Don't wake up in November wishing you did more. Fill out this form, and all UUJAZ/ UU the Vote opportunities will be emailed to you, with links to sign up.
