Book Group
Sunday, August 6, at 9:00 AM in Annex B
The Book Group engages in informal discussions of a variety of books. We typically discuss recent nonfiction books on topics such as science, religion, sociology, history, current events, environmental issues and justice, but we don't exclude fiction. Books we read are proposed by the members and voted on by the group. We typically spend 4 to 8 weeks on a book, discussing portions as we read. New Day Center Meal

Live out the UU commitment to serving those in need by serving a meal to the 150 parents and children of the UMOM New Day Center. This is a one-time, two-hour commitment.

Curt Yeager Memorial Service
Saturday, August 5, at 3:00 PM in the Sanctuary
We will be remembering the life of UUCP member Curt Yeager this Saturday at 3:00 PM with a service in the sanctuary. All are invited to join Curt's wife, Barb, and other members of his family for this service. A reception will follow the service. 
Remembering Celso Mireles
There are multiple opportunities to say goodbye and celebrate the life of Celso Mireles, who died tragically in a traffic accident  on Tuesday
- Visitation and viewing on  Monday, August 75:00 PM -9:00 PM in the UUCP sanctuary. 
- Catholic Mass (In Spanish) at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral (27th Avenue & Maryland Road),  Tuesday, August 8 at 10:00 AM followed by an escorted procession to Holy Cross Cemetery (99th Avenue & Thomas Road) for  11:30 AM burial service. 
- A memorial and celebration of life will be held at UUCP on  Saturday, August 26, time TBA.

Walking the Walk Justice Camp
August 12-16: Last Chance to Register
Walking the Walk is a justice summit, bringing together justice-seeking UUs for a weekend of dynamic worship, workshops, practical skills, networking and community building! Share and learn with other justice leaders on critical justice issues. Refresh and revive your spirit with powerful worship and reflection in the peaceful retreat setting of Camp de Benneville Pines in Southern California. This event is  co-sponsored by UUJAZ.
Maryland School Partnership
Many students come to Maryland School from families that have a difficult time providing support for their children, school budgets are inadequate to maintain needed programs, and teachers often spend their own money to have necessary supplies.  Also many students require extra help to master grade level skills.  Your help is needed in a variety of ways!  Please check the July/August Horizons for more information about our partnership or stop by the Justice Ministry table on a Sunday. We will be collecting supplies from July 23 - August 13.
Green Sanctuary

80's Babies Small Group

Path to Membership

Pathway to Membership is a class that invites you to meet with other folks considering membership and hear more from ministers, leaders and recently-joined members about what it means to be a member of our congregation. You will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Unitarian Universalism and UUCP, get to know each other in groups and ask questions. 
The class ends with an invitation to join by signing the membership book and pledging your support. There is no pressure to join. We recognize membership is a commitment, and we hope people will take their time before joining.
To register, stop by the welcome table in the lobby and fill out the registration, register on the UUCP website or contact Janine Gelsinger.
Art Journaling Workshop
Saturday, September 2, 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Johnson Room
Join Heidi Parmenter in exploring the worship theme "Welcoming" and the desert nature theme "Saguaro" through mixed media art journaling. No experience required, only an open mind and a desire to express oneself through visual art. We will start the workshop with introductions, chalice lighting and reading and then jump right into creative visual expression of the theme. We will finish up with a "show and tell" for those that want to share their work. Required supplies:  your own mixed media art journal in any size (make sure that the paper is thick!), acrylic paint brushes, acrylic paint, scissors, old credit cards or gift cards, and a small spray bottle of water. This workshop is open to anyone 12 and older (parents may need to be present for those 12 - 14, please contact Heidi for more details). No RSVP and this workshop is FREE.
Labor Day Camping Weekend at SAWUURA
Friday, September 1 - Monday, September 4, 2017
SAWUURA is our own UU 100-acre woods in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness near Young, AZ (about 4-hours drive from Phoenix). Join dozens of other UUs Labor Day weekend for a relaxing weekend under the stars. Disconnect from your phones, computers, TVs and share meals, hikes, music and laughter with other nature-lovers. Meals are provided with the cost of registration, just bring snacks, drinks and camping gear.
Registration Fees: $60 per adult ($50 for SAWUURA members), $25 per child.
Registration Due Date: Friday, August 25.

Campus Spruce up Opportunities

Sunday, September 10, is our congregation's Ingathering Service. Ingathering is our "kick-off" to the new ministry year where we welcome everyone back to the valley from their summer vacations and travels. Heidi is looking for volunteers to help make our campus sparkle and shine for Ingathering. Email Heidi if you are willing to take on any of these jobs and indicate a day/time you'd like to work on the task. Heidi will help make sure you have the materials you need and access to the campus. Certificates are available for those who need community service hours.
