THIS SUNDAY'S
WORSHIP SERVICE
|
|
|
"Working Together for Social Justice:
The Intersectional Imperative"
Maria Wood, Guest Speaker
Marilee Taussig, Service Leader
Kate Bennett, Musician
In Person and Zoom
Sunday, December 11, 2022
Author, teacher, and activist Luisah Teish has said, "Our fates are tied. We have this strange notion on this planet that our fates are not tied. If it were not so we would not be here together. It’s that simple.” It’s a reality that can’t be denied, so why do people seem to insist on defining ourselves through division and polarization? More importantly, how do we work through this human impulse, and move toward greater social justice?
So we can begin the service promptly at 10 am, please arrive at the church, or sign into Zoom ( click here) by no later than 9:50 am.
Welcoming Families and Children on Sunday Mornings
Each Sunday, UUCR offers childcare and simple age-appropriate activities for children of all ages. If you have any questions about UUCR's programming for families and children, please be in touch with Rev. Sue.

Sunday, December 18 — In Person & ZOOM
"Wonder, Awe, and the Darkest of Nights"
What do you most pay attention to when it is really dark out? The stars, the quiet, the sounds? Have you recently been in awe of pictures coming back from the new Webb telescope? At this service with Rev. Sue Browning we'll gather and consider this quote from Albert Einstein: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." As a part of this service we will light the menorah in celebration of Hanukkah. If you would like to assist with the lighting of the menorah, please contact Rev. Sue in advance of the service.
- Rev. Sue Browning, Minister
- Jan Sprinkel, Service Leader
- Al Martinez, Musician

Soup Sampler Supper (and Sale)
Tomorrow Night
Friday, December 9, 6 PM
at UUCR
|
|
|
We have sold all the tickets and, unfortunately,
will be unable to accept any walk-ins.
To all who have previously purchased tickets for our event: Over 65 people will be partaking of our eleven tasty soups, five luscious breads, and ample elegant desserts tomorrow night, so be prepared to share your table with friends new and old. Because a number of our attendees will need to eat and then head to the Presbyterian Church for the Chorale Concert, we will start serving promptly at 6 p.m., and will continue serving until 7 p.m. Before you leave, be sure to order more soups ($10 per quart) and loaves ($6 per loaf), which will be delivered to you at UUCR after church services on December 18. If you cannot be at UUCR on December 18, we will work out a special arrangement.
Don't forget to bring your beverage of choice; we will supply apple cider and water.
See you on Friday!
From your Fundraising Task Force — Lynn Dolinger, Linda Dutton, Jane Hardy, and Mary Pritchard

"Holiday Sharing" Program
|
|
For the past several years our UUCR Social Justice Committee has organized a personalized, holiday gift collection for a local family in need as sponsored by our Kent County Department of Social Services along with gift cards for DSS families in Queen Anne's County. We have been matched with a family of six, which includes a father and five children ranging in age from 1 - 10 years old. This year you will find gift tags, suggested items to purchase, and more instructions on the the poster near the bulletin board. Please be generous in your purchase of gifts for these individuals.
If you can't get to church and want to sign up for a gift, please contact either Linda Dutton or Lynn Dolinger. In addition, you can donate funds (before December 18) which will help us provide gift cards or buy additional gifts. You can contribute by bringing, or sending, a check to the church office, made out to UUCR specifying "Holiday Sharing" in the memo line, or you can donate online at the church website using the "Donate" button (click here) and "Custom Amount," specifying "Holiday Sharing" in the comment section.
Wrapped gifts with tags must be returned to UUCR by Sunday, December 18! Any monetary donations must be made before December 18 to allow time for us to purchase gift cards or any additional gifts! Questions? Ask Linda Dutton or Lynn Dolinger. Thanks!

Once again our friend Anne Bricker has extended the use of her beautiful home in Rock Hall (at 4870 Huntingfield Road) for this occasion on Wednesday, December 21. Please arrive by 4:15 PM, bring a “potluck” to share, and dress for an outdoor appreciation of the Solstice. Please contact Vida Morley if you have any questions.

Another "Orientation to UUCR" Session

The Membership Committee plans to hold another Orientation session in February or March. Please let the committee know if you are interested in attending, and we will pick a date that works for most. Committee members are: Diane Shields, Nancy Holland, Margo Long, and David Biehler.

2023 Winter Shelter
Volunteers Needed
|
|
The Samaritan Group of Kent County is preparing to host the 2023 Winter Shelter again and we need your help! We are happy to announce the return of pre-pandemic shelter operations -- including family-style meals and evening volunteers. These opportunities to engage with those in our community experiencing homelessness are such an important aspect of what we do.
In this year's volunteer sign-up sheet you'll see THREE options for volunteering:
- Evening volunteers (5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.; 2 volunteers per shift)
- Meal volunteers (prepares and delivers shelter dinner by 6 p.m.; with option to stay and share this meal with the guests), and
- Overnight volunteers (10 p.m. - 8 a.m.; separate sleeping quarters provided).
With the return of our expanded operations comes an increased need in volunteer support. We hope you will join us this year!
