Upcoming Service &
Summer Discussion Service
| |
|
June 30 — In-person
"Sleeping with the Enemy"
This discussion is based on an article by Elizabeth Kolbert (author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History), published in The New Yorker, August 8, 2011. It outlines the development of DNA genomes for humans, Neanderthals, and others and illuminates the fact that many humans have a small percentage of Neanderthal genetic variants — indicating that interbreeding did occur. So, what does it mean to be “human?” How do we differ from the rest of the animals on earth?
- Diane Shields, Discussion Leader
July 07 — In-person
"Anti-racism and white supremacy- What have we learned? Let's share our stories and how we've grown."
- Philip Dutton, Discussion Leader
July 14 — In-person
"Your Favorite Piece of Music"
- Linda Weimer, Discussion Leader

Thank you all so much for the send-off party last week. The gifts, energy, and fun were just perfect! Thank you also for being a part of the service this past Sunday. I'm wrapping up a few more meetings, and will attend UUCR's June Board meeting this week. We're getting close.
I'm walking through final steps at UUCR as I pop in and out of this year's national ministers' conference and UUA General Assembly (GA), both online this year. I look forward to sharing the GA experience this year with UUCR's delegates MQ Riding and Linda Dutton, along with UUFE's representatives. Together we'll keep you posted on the conference, and in particular on the status of the proposed "Article 2" changes, i.e., the UUA bylaw revision centering the values of Love, Generosity, Pluralism, Justice, Equity, Transformation, and Interdependence.
The sermon from last Sunday best captures where my head and heart are now. (The text of the sermon is HERE.)
In faith,
Rev. Sue

Getting Ready for the New Church Year | |
|
Transitions are a part of life and a
part of a community. UUCR is going through a significant transition. Reverend Sue will be departing at the end of the month and Reverend Kathryn Adams will be with us in in September.
Starting in July, we will be in what is frequently called (in the consulting world) a neutral zone. A neutral zone isn’t necessarily static, it can be a time of preparation for new beginnings.
With that thought in mind, I would like to propose a leadership meeting on July 20th. This meeting will be for every Friend and Member who would like to participate and for all committee chairs and members to attend. We will keep the meeting to the morning, to let everyone enjoy the balance of the day, wherever they choose.
I would like feedback on this concept of preparing for the new church year, feel free to reach out to me directly. There will be more to come on the agenda in next week’s Reflections.
Very best,
MQ
